Black magic? Like voodoo?   

In the case of this example, even though at first glance it appears the cover has been trimmed, I don't see indisputable evidence of it. Truth be told, I see a couple of things that lead me to believe otherwise. 

As one of my friends says: "All these books have been trimmed---it's just a matter of figuring out who trimmed it."
