A 1972 book stamped 1973? A rare stamping variant!

amazingspiderman117cgc98-max-1400.thumb.jpg.06e254e4061d4d4efa3921757788c973.jpg

In my experience, the "1972" and "1973" stamps can be hard to tell apart.

At first I thought I had the opposite -- a 1973 book stamped "1972"  -- which would have been even weirder. Upon closer examination, I can see the stamp is 1973 with a little bit of smearing to keep us all guessing (72? 73? 78?)

I was initially going to put forth the conspiracy theory that my book and Legion HQ's books might have been stamped by the same store(!) since the years look so similar. However, his MAR 28 has a very consistent baseline while my NOV 5 is all snuggle-toothed, so probably not.

I've been collecting for over 40 years, and I believe this is my first date stamp. (To be fair, I avoided them when I was younger.) I got this book from Dale Roberts and the date stamp was part of the charm!

After all this talk about the final days of date stamps, time to go back in time to the early ones.  Here's an oldie from 1947 with a "FEB 28" date stamp (under Cap's arm).  Cool thing, that is the official release date!  It also has a store stamp (and a signature that somehow eluded me until now :)).

glad you are loving it! When I sold it I mentioned the signature, likely the daughter of the store stamp owner!!!

Here is one I just came across it when I was looking for another book

Just a thought, could you actually date stamp over slight color touch and resub hm(shrug)

Hmmmmm or even a store stamp? Does CGC do anything to validate date stamps or store stamps when seen? That sounds sneaky to try but I would be intrigued

It is pretty slick. I thought the same thing, if they look for age to it but who knows.

I’m guessing they don’t. And the minor colour touch would have to be super minor for them to miss underneath a stamp

Would suck if the color touch is on the character, characters face, or center of the book.

I just got this date stamp, which is somehow 2 months before the release date of the issue? 🤔

The December date on the comic is not the date it was released. Comics back in the day were released a few months before the month noted on the cover.

If you have never check out the following site, it’s great for showing when comics actually hit newsstands back in the day. A quick check confirms that your Avengers issue hit the stands in October of 1967 :)

I don't really care for date stamps.  I think this is the only book I have that has one.

Take it back.  Found another one with a date stamp.  Really awful one in my opinion as it's smudged, but I guess that doesn't go against the grade.

Awful?  Naw.  Your date stamp is quite a decent one actually.  While a bit blurry, it is entirely legible and nothing like a smudge.  My understanding, from having seen 9.6s and even some rare 9.8s with a date stamp, is that neat, normal size date stamps do not count against the grade unless they are smudged when present on the front cover (so akin to a stain).

I've been pretty disciplined sticking to my wantlist for SA keys over the years, and Daredevil #1 was not on my short list of bigger keys.  So I wasn't supposed to acquire a DD#1 before an X-Men #1.   But a couple of years ago, a fellow boardie offered this lower grade DD#1 (raw at the time), and I made an exception due to the date stamp.  "JAN 28" is within a week of the official release date, so it brings to mind when fans first started reading this book. I also like how it follows the angle of "Here comes..." and "DAREDEVIL"!  The cover is also relatively bright for the grade, so a decent placeholder.  This DD#1 in hand, I never felt the urge to upgrade it, at least not before obtaining an X-Men #1, etc.  So date stamps can also help folks adhere to collecting goals!

Here's a few that I have run into in my collection:

The famous Thorpe and Porter stamp right in the sweet spot:

A store or maybe a collector, I don't really know.  The address is a storefront now but I would venture to guess that it was back then, as well.  Ali Aljad on 1111 Rutland Road in Brooklyn.  This one I bought in Brooklyn when I was a kid so I don't think it went very far.

And then there's this one from Italy - Napoli (Naples) .  Casa de (something or other) 130 Lira, and it arrived June 1965.  Anyone have info on this one?
