Some awesome books have popped up lately, and I'm looking to fund a purchase or two.  I'll be posting a few at a time, as time permits.  

Some cool SOTI books to come, as well as a few non-SOTI items.

Returns for any reason welcome within 14 days.  If the return is due to my error, I pay return shipping; otherwise, you pay return shipping. 

These items come from a smoke-free and, to the best of our knowledge, COVID-free house.

No probationites or shameful ones.  

Shipping $12 in the US.  Sorry, no shipping outside the US at the moment because that requires an extra trip to the Post Office, which I'm not willing to do right now.  If you're outside the US and you'd like something in this thread, let's discuss a solution.

Shipping via USPS Priority Mail, fully insured.  I ship within 3 business days of receiving cleared payment.

PM's are welcome, but "take it" in thread beats everything else. .

All books unrestored unless noted.  I have never pressed a book or bought a book I knew to be pressed, so everything is, to my knowledge, unpressed.

For the budget conscious, here's the first copy of Seduction of the Innocent.  

This is the book that nearly killed the entire US comic book industry.

First edition, first print, second state without dust jacket.

Book:  Bookplate inside FC, name and old price written on front free end paper.  Otherwise unmarked.  Some bumping to head of spine and corners of boards.  All typical pages present including 16 pages of illustrations.  Bibliography is not present, but a photocopy of the bibliography is included.*

*Second state means that this copy does not have the bibliography.  The book was originally published with a bibliography leaf (pp. 399-400).  When comic book publishers threatened to sue over their name being included in this list, the publisher of SOTI gave in and had the bibliography leaf removed from all subsequent copies of the book.  Dr. Wertham didn't even know this was happening until he started getting complaints from readers that their books had been mutilated.  I have included a tipped-in photocopy of the bibliography for your reference.

This price is for the SOTI book ONLY, not the copies of Reform School Girl and Phantom Lady, who just happened to wander into the picture to make it look cooler.

 

You can tell a true first print by the R colophon on the publication page.

The lady is not for sale.  She's just watching over the book for me.

Again, this lady isn't for sale either.  Just the copy of SOTI.

Photocopy of the bibliography is included.

Next copy, second printing of SOTI, with dust jacket.  You can tell the second print because

1) It doesn't have the R colophon on the publication page and 

2) The dust jacket reads "SECOND PRINTING" at the top of the front flap.

Dust jacket worn with some edge chipping, and some paper loss at the spine.  Protected in a Brodart-style protector.

Book is sharp and unmarked. Photocopy of the bibliography page included.

Well done.  This book is a great read and that IMO is a very fair price.

Seduction of the Innocent by Dr. Fredric Wertham, first edition, first print, first state, with dust jacket and bibliography.  The grail for SOTI collectors.

I just purchased the book without a dust jacket, and added a dust jacket from another book.  Since the book and the dust jacket were manufactured separately and are not attached, there's no way you could know that if I didn't tell you.  As long as the book and the dust jacket are both first printings (which they are) there is no way to tell (with this book or another) whether the dust jacket is the one that was originally sold with the book.

You probably already know the story.  This book was printed with a bibliography leaf (pp. 399-400), but the publisher (Rinehart) was afraid of lawsuits from comic publishers and ordered that the bibliography be sliced out of all the books before distribution.  Some copies, however, made it out with the bibliography intact.  I've never seen a credible number as to how many got out with this page intact, but if you're looking for this book you know how tough it is to find a copy with the bibliography.

The dust jacket is price clipped and has some edge wear and paper loss at the spine.  The jacket comes protected in a Brodart-style jacket protector.  

The book has a bookplate inside the FC, a name on the front free end paper, and a place where somebody tried to erase some pencil on the same page.  Some minor ripping at the top of the spine, as you can see in the photos.  Handling wear is also evident in the photos.   All 16 pages of illustrations are present in the middle of the book, as is that elusive bibliography page.

$495 shipped via Media Mail.  Add $12 for Priority Mail.

 

No, the Phantom Lady is not included.
