Here's one you don't see.  Ever.  Perhaps you haven't even heard of it?

It's Tween Age Digest #1.  As was common with children's digests of the day, it's full of stories, puzzles, cartoons and, you guessed it, comics.

This magazine is notable because it was cited by Dr. Wertham in Seduction of the Innocent.

In my experience, much tougher to find than many of the tough SOTI books, like Peter Penny and Kewpies.  None on the census, and it took me years to find a copy.  Years more, and I found this one.

$450

Here's another SOTI book that doesn't come up very often.  Hopalong Cassidy and the Mad Barber.  GPA shows only two sales since 2013.

Fun fact:  there are two versions of this book:  a 16-page version and a 24-page version.  At the time I submitted this book, I wasn't aware of that fact, and I'm not sure CGC was either.

CGC has erroneously labeled at least one of the 16-pagers as an 8-page book on the label.  Since this has no such notation, I'm guessing this may be the 24-page version, but I can't say that for sure without cracking it out.

Whichever version it is, it's tough to come by, and a beautiful CGC 8.5 with off-white pages.

$375

And in the "what the heck is that doing here" department... Jughead's Follies.  Not used in Seduction of the Innocent at all. But one really cool book.  Jughead as Elvis.  From what I can tell after spending nearly a whole minute at GCD, the earliest mentions of Elvis in the comics were November, 1956.  This is an undated book from 1957, so a very early Elvis appearance.

GPA shows two sales in 2018 and none since.

Solid, mid-grade copy with really nice gloss and some pressable issues that I tried to catch in the photos.  Water stain at top.  Snug centerfold.

$295

After describing the comic book section found within Out of this World Adventures #2, Wertham writes on pp. 120-121 of SOTI:

This undercover extension of the comic book format has also spread to what on the outside appear to be regular magazines in the children's field. Children's Digest, published by Parents' Magazine at the stiff price of thirty-five cents, contains sections in typical comic-book form with bad colors and crowded balloons. The text has the comic-book flavor, too.

A similar children's magazine, Tween Age Digest, at twenty-five cents, also looks like a regular magazine, but has comic-book sections.  One of these is a supercondensed comic-book

version of Don Quixote. You see him lying on the ground: "The servants beat Don Quixote mercilessly and although he swore vengeance he was helpless as a beetle on his back."

When a publisher was asked recently about this spreading of the comic-book style to regular publications he answered: That is simple. We are retooling for illiteracy.

Wertham quotes the panel in the photo below.

The book looks innocence but the violence is well-hidden (even though it's an small incident).  I don't have SOTI book but someday I will get it. Since you spent years to find this copy, thank you for giving us the opportunity to see this part.

Gearing up for the next small batch, which I'll post this weekend, time permitting.

There may be another SOTI with bibliography (much lower grade).

There will be another first print SOTI without bibliography.

Then a couple more slabbed and a couple more raw SOTI comics.

Hopefully I will be around when/if you post another SOTI.

@bounty_coder snagged a copy I would have loved to pick up
