If word ever gets out about that, I can see a mad rush to the back issue bins! I stumbled on em. I never liked Kirby and bought a small box of books my LCS buddy picked up cheap -offering him $80. He said thats too much I said trust me I'll make money here and have the books I want to keep as a bonus. I doubled my money selling the ASMs and kept many books, including 8 Thor. As I read them I got hooked on Kirby. Now I have a solid Kirby collection and I quickly realized Kirby Thors were well written and great art and undervalued. I got a quarter but we only went to store with comics rarely where I would get 2 comics and a licorice or an 80 pg giant. Getting all the comics I wanted when going to hospital was very special. Those stories above have a special fondness for me. The X Men I did not read for abt 10 days as I was in severe pain and strapped to a bed that would rotate so i wouldnt get bed sores. I also had prism glasses so I could watch TV lying on my back. Hollywood1892, 1950's war comics, Larryw7 and 3 others

Popular Post kav
There was also one event in 7th grade where kid let me buy stack of comics for $1 on 2 separate occasions. That was like a miracle. Thats where I picked up one of my favorite books WF 160. Biggest regret is I did not focus on WF Curt Swan books back then or Adv comics. Instead I bought Action superman and superboy-so mostly wayne boring george papp stan kaye. I also got tiger pajamas. Then in 1975 2 weeks in hospital for back surgery-this is the only book I can remember. Very cool. That is the cat's pajamas! I picked up several copies myself. Likewise Thor 134. Which 134? The one with dark blue or the plum title shadowing?

Do kids even care any more? Fantastic thing for you to do! The kids who have parents buying them Nintendo Switches and everything at their will, most likely won't care. There are plenty of kids in the hospital that don't have much to do while there and comics will give them something to distract themselves from where they are. You have to figure that some parents are having their bank accounts drained from their children's procedures and hospital stay. A positive benefit is adding more eyes to the future generation of comic collectors! Journey Into Mystery starts off very poorly, but once you get into the issues in the 100's it's really consistently entertaining and just gets better and better; Absorbing Man, Hercules / Pluto, Tana Nile and the Colonisers, Ego, Mangog, Origin of Galactus, the slugfest with Him / Warlock. Classic Lee / Kirby material. KirbyJack, Larryw7 and kav
Robot Man
I was a kid at the beginning of the SA of Marvel. I loved Spider-Man, The Hulk and Fantastic Four. X-Men and Thor not to much. I just didn’t get the mythology thing or the mutant thing. Really wish I kept my JIM 83 and X-Men 1. Traded them off for the other guys and Batman. Anybody read comics at the barber shop? My shop had a bunch of pretty well worn late ‘40’s/early ‘50’s books. The barber would let me bring in my comics and trade them for his one to one. I still have a couple of Fight and Planets I traded Archie and Ritchie Rich for. All I had to do was blow out the hair with my mom’s hairdryer. Popular Post ThreeSeas
Comics in the hospital..Yeah, that I think was a turning point for me in collecting as they were a relief from all of the pain I was going through. 1975, October, my 12 year old self had a broken arm and ended laying on my back in traction for 21 days straight with a pin through my elbow. Broken wrist, broken shoulder, and shattered elbow. My mother came and stayed with me every day and always made sure I had comics to read. I think that she wrote my name on the covers on nearly all of the comics she brought me. I guess she did not want the nurses to take them, for which I am grateful. I was lucky that the doctor I had, had just gotten back from Vietnam and knew how to fix me up, as I was told by other doc's that I may not ever get use of it again. Except for a scar it is all normal now. Now that I am finally entering scans of my comics into my computer, if I see one with my name on it, it gets the "hospital" designation in the database. Comic Books were an oasis, a safe haven and escape from all of the pain I had endured. kav, JJ-4, jools&jim and 4 others 6
