I was wondering what grade do you think this is? Would this benefit from a press or a clean?

My guess is 8.0.

Definitely 9.0 or better potential. Light edge wear it appears along bottom edge and some light fraying at spine corners. I think it transcends the VF range personally.

8.5 IMO.

In order for it to be worth it, this particular issue needs to be 9.4 or better. A press and clean will help but it won’t get you to a 9.4.

I'm not sure if anyone noticed it during their assessments, but near the left-hand-side of N'Kantu's head - on the front cover above - there is a faded 50p mark - also on the top of the first page there's a '50p' annotation in pencil - would this influence the grading?

Sorry, but I don't think this would grade 9.0. The corners and edges aren't that sharp and there is dirt on the back cover along the spine. Also there is minor color flaking on the bottom right. I would grade it 8.0.

Nope. Ink/date stamps and minor store stamps like that on old books rarely affect the value. I mean, you might not get a 9.6-9.8 but you can still easily get a 9.0-9.4 if it is in that condition otherwise. Personally, I love marks like this but I know there are picky folks who want nothing at all on the cover.
