Why it is a 9.4 but not a 8.5?

Few days ago, I bought a AMS300 graded at 9.4. When I received it, I found there are around 6-7 spin ticks and a one long color break the the open side. Once I got the slab, I thought it is a 8.5 since there are long color break on the open side. Can anyone please kindly give me some suggestion? Is this book worth for 9.4 instead of 8.5? is the grader just miss that long color break?

here are some photo for your easy reference.

It is a 9.4, not a 9.8 plus grading is subjective and manufacturing defects are not counted against it.  Buy the book, not the grade. I would ask that you learn a bit more about inspecting before a purchase and grading before buying more graded books and running into similar issues.

Looks fine to me. Printer's crease is a manufacturing thing. You obviously want a nicer looking 9.4 so you should request lotsa pics in order to be happy.

I have a few of these books in my collection.  I think they are referred to as "printer's veins" in which the paper slightly overlaps a bit during printing.  I have one, Astonishing Tales #28 with multiple veins on both the back and front of the cover.  Paul~

You learn something everyday. It is what it is but I would think a manufacturing defect should count against the grade but that's my 2c. I mean as an extreme example if the printer cut off part of the cover that wolud count as a manufacturing error and most people  wouldn't want the book.

9.4 allows for all sorts of factory defects and that's where all those colour breaks are coming from. It makes for a flawed looking book but still a near mint one.

An 8.5 probably would not look much different, you are right, but the defects (like slight colour breaks) would come from wear and tear after it was produced and not from flaws during production.

Not all books are equal. I collect golden age and come across a bunch of miscut books all the time. I have one where you clearly see the inner wraps were not cut preperly so part of one wrap is still on another page. So one page ends up having these pieces removed from the margin (but those same pieces are found elsewhere). But it's a great looking book that survived 70 years looking almost the same as the day it was made. I see no reason for the defect to go against the grade.
