Gary, do you know the origins of this Captain Britain badge? I bought it because it was cool and is in the same design and materials as the 1977 Marvel Comics magnets. It is not dated but has to be pre-1982 when his costume changed. I am not sure if this was a free gift, merchandise from ad or promo given to fans. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

I just got this poster from 1972. I am not sure how rare it is compared to other free gifts, but I know one had to destroy (clipping stamps from pages) 10 comics to get it.

Hi lynch, the poster is quite rare even in UK, about one a year turns up on eBay UK. Did you buy this recently from UK? One was sold recently, i was debating buying it but was still thinking when it sold. The stamps you had to cut out are our version of MVS.

Hi Gary, yes I was the one that bought it. I convinced the UK seller to ship to the USA. I had seen repros of it on eBay USA but I only collect originals.

This wasn't a free gift, but I had never seen one before so bought it. The 1972 ad must have been for a different shirt than the one advertised.

I don’t know for certain but I suspect the T-shirt you have is the one you would get from the add you have shown (may 1973). I have seen your T-shirt before but never the one in the advert (based on MMMS sweatshirt). For me the persuader is the address label on yours is the order form in the comic. That months Mighty World Of Marvel had a yellow order form exactly as address label on your envelope.

Possibly of interest the original MMMS hulk sweatshirt was given away in UK to persons who wrote a letter to Smash comic. Editorial also says they are looking to similar for Wham comic and Thing sweatshirt.

Thanks for these great pics and your research. It is impressive that you knew the year from the color of the label. I bought it mostly because it still had its mailer. I would have been disappointed if I ordered the shirt in the AD but received something else.

Thanks, I am glad it continues to be a mystery and gives me more reason to continue researching!

Some of the comments imply the mystery is solved:

"The badge was one in a series of Marvel & DC superheroes badges produced in 1977 or early 1978. They did Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, Captain Britain, Hulk, Captain America? plus one or two others. It wasn’t ‘given away’ – you would have purchased them in stationary/toy shops and possibly in some newsagents. It would have been presented on a very large laminated & perforated card featuring different characters, and you would have torn off the badge of your choice – resulting in you holding a square perforated card containing the badge (but ‘sealed’ in the laminate). I still have one or two ‘sealed’ in the perforated card, but there are no makers mark on the cards (that I have) – I think manufacturer details would have been present on a section of the large card not containing a badge."

Thanks. Monogram made the Marvel and DC magnets: On their backsides was a magnet and a double sided adhesive strip. The Captain Britain has neither, only a pin fastener. I think it is a great character and costume.

Me too - I can remember buying the first issues as a kid.

Good luck with the badge hunt - a few have sold on eBay recently - here's one (no additional info alas):

The Avengers weekly, released in UK week ending 22 September 1973. Reprints Avengers #4 and Dr Strange from Strange Tales #115;

The free gift was a set of 4 transfers - Hulk, Spider-man, Daredevil and Thor. These transfers were dampened and then applied to the skin;

The transfers were by Spanish artist Lopez Espi (He also did a set posters you could buy through Marvel UK and many covers for European Marvel editions). Unfortunately you can't appreciate his art on these transfers without applying them but here are stickers of Spider-man, Daredevil and Thor which have the same images;

I'm hot on your tail with these two recent submissions back from Sarasota. And yes, both have the free gifts (Hulk and Spider-Man transfers respectively).
