Catman Comics

I've decided to dip my toe into GA collecting. Instead of buying GA DC or Marvel, I want to get a few comics from the lesser-known publishers.

I've always wanted to read a Catman comic, but man, those issues are expensive! Is there any particular reason for this, or is it just the luck of the draw?

Generally hard to find. Lots of WWII covers. Later issues have LB Cole covers. There are a lot of factors that make Cat-Man comics desirable and expensive.

About a third of the run is highly desirable due to scarcity, Hitler covers or cool L.B.Cole covers. This in turn creates interest in the entire run, which is a nice length to make an effort at completing once the more expensive high demand issues are acquired.

Timely failed to mention that no. 28 is expensive mainly because he's hoarding copies. Maybe he'll sell you one at a discount to get you started, though.

I've been collecting them on and off for about 20 years. They haven't typically been that expensive. I think someone with deep pockets was trying to build a run in 2016/2017, and that drove the prices up temporarily. With niche titles like Catman, prices can be very, very volatile. It only takes one or two collectors entering or exiting the hobby to have a significant impact on prices. I buy them to keep; if you decide to pick some up, accept that you might not be able to sell them for as much as you paid. These are the ones I have:

The no. 20 was the most expensive one even though it's the lowest-graded copy out of the bunch.

Beautiful books, Jimbo, although a corneal transplant may be required after that Heritage scan.  :shy:

Currently have 6 of the 32 book run, only one overlapping your's.  Most of those desired in high grade I've collected.

BTW, good call on what's iz name, that hoarder dude! lol

I have close to a dozen of them all in low grade. Had to pay stiff prices even for them. They have never been common and are all cool books.

A dealer at the last Yorba Linda show had a good run of them. I was lucky to pick up a couple. He sold all the rest quickly.

Robot Man, I must draw the line at grave robbing to acquire comics, even in the name of science!  No good can come of it! :preach:

Here's another rare one & the only known copy in high grade!

I remember how that one sat on Metro's site raw for $1,700 for seversl years without selling; then they or their consignor slabbed it and doubled the price to $3,400, and it sold within about six months. :insane:

I never robbed graves for comics but once stole grave yard flowers to give to a pretty girl...
