Right on both counts and I like you're thinking bringing up "Man" which makes total sense when you are thinking of the overall concept of X-Men and the struggle of mutants vs humans.  If anything "Man" would be the #1 villain as they also create the conflict with Magneto.

I love the original Brotherhood but they are probably too closely linked to Magneto, so I will settle for the Mystique led crew.
