SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON @ HOME 2020 event (7/23/20)

San Diego Comic-Con is doing things a little differently this year. Titled “Comic-Con @ Home,” you’ll have a front-row seat to some of the biggest names in comics and entertainment without having to deal with the crowds clambering towards Hall H – and the first panel details for the late July event have now been revealed.

Taking place between July 23 and July 26, the virtual SDCC will feature 300-400 panels according to The Wrap.

Among the official big-name panels so far are *deep breath*:

  • Archer, Bob's Burgers
  • Bill & Ted
  • Constantine reunion with Keanu Reeves
  • The Walking Dead
  • Fear the Walking Dead
  • Marvel TV show Helstrom
  • The Simpsons
  • Solar Opposites
  • What We Do in the Shadows
  • Conversation with Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman
  • Expect the likes of Marvel Studios and Netflix's The Witcher to also feature

While there may be “live elements to some programming,” it’s expected that all panels will be “filmed ahead of time by studios and networks and submitted in advance.”

In essence, that removes one of the most appealing things about Comic-Con: the fans. With no Q&As, no reactions, and no instantly-iconic sharp intakes of breath and loud cheers – think Natalie Portman taking the stage with Mjolnir in a Thor: Love and Thunder announcement or Zack Snyder announcing Batman v Superman – the experience will be a little diluted.

What won’t be diluted, however, is the sheer quantity on show. While not panel has been announced as of writing – though expect some news shortly – it’s comforting to know that, should you have your pass, you’ll be able to waltz into any of the hundreds of panels on offer. No fuss, no hassle, and certainly no sweat. Perfect.

The virtual con season will also roll into late summer with DC’s FanDome event in August promising a presence from the Justice League Snyder Cut, to Wonder Woman 1984, and even James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

San Diego Comic-Con at Home: Here Are All the Must-See Virtual Panels and Screenings

Quote

San Diego Comic-Con’s virtual Comic-Con@Home event is starting to take shape, with several studios and networks jumping in to bring their shows and movies into fans’ living rooms.

AMC is hosting panels for its “Walking Dead” universe and “NOS4A2,” while Disney is prepping 11 different presentations, including a career retrospective on Nathan Fillion, who stars on ABC’s “The Rookie.” And Disney+ will make its Comic-Con debut with three virtual Q&As, including one for Nat Geo’s “The Right Stuff.”

Meanwhile, Hulu has set a virtual panel for its upcoming Marvel series “Helstrom,” as well as “Solar Opposites” and “Crossing Swords.” Syfy’s “Wynonna Earp” will be on hand to celebrate its long-awaited fourth season, which will debut that same weekend. And FX Networks will be bringing “Archer” and “What We Do in the Shadows.”

On the film side, Orion Pictures will be streaming a panel for its upcoming “Bill & Ted” sequel, “Bill & Ted Face the Music.”

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con was canceled in April due the coronavirus outbreak, marking the first time the annual pop culture event won’t happen as planned in its 50-year history. In May, Comic-Con International revealed it would be holding a virtual con in lieu of the in-person event, with “personalized snacks, free parking and no lines,” among other lockdown-friendly perks.

The online convention, dubbed Comic-Con@Home, will take place July 23-26, the same time span during which San Diego Comic-Con would have been held.

  • THE WALKING DEAD
  • FEAR THE WALKING DEAD
  • THE WALKING DEAD: WORLD BEYOND
  • NOS4A2
  • WYNONNA EARP
  • A CONVERSATION WITH NATHAN FILLION
  • AMERICAN DAD!
  • BLESS THE HARTS
  • BOB’S BURGERS
  • DUNCANVILLE
  • FAMILY GUY
  • THE GOLDBERGS
  • HOOPS
  • NEXT
  • THE SIMPSONS
  • STUMPTOWN
  • MARVEL’S 616
  • PHINEAS AND FERB THE MOVIE: CANDACE AGAINST THE UNIVERSE
  • THE RIGHT STUFF
  • HELSTROM
  • SOLAR OPPOSITES
  • CROSSING SWORDS
  • ARCHER
  • WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS
  • BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC

Marvel Studios is reportedly not hosting a panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con which will be done virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Marvel Studios is reportedly skipping this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many Hollywood events and other social gatherings have been delayed or just canceled. Instead of doing either of those, however, SDCC opted to work around the situation by hosting it virtually with a string of panels involved that may not include one for the MCU.

After wrapping up the Infinity Saga last year via Avengers: Endgame, followed by Spider-Man: Far From Home, which functioned as an epilogue, the franchise is currently on an extended hiatus. Black Widow was supposed to kick things off for Phase 4 back in May, but because of the ongoing global health crisis, it had to be pushed back to November, resulting in a domino effect on the MCU's confirmed schedule. Marketing for the Cate Shortland and Scarlett Johansson film is still ongoing, but it might take a while for fans to learn more about the projects that come after it.

According to a report from the Deadline, Marvel Studios won't be hosting any panel for SDCC at home. The event is slated for July 22-26, which promises fans a gathering that will allow them to experience the annual event at the comforts of their own homes. In conjunction with that, DC is also supposedly skipping the event, deciding to save their content for their own virtual convention, DCFandome, scheduled to take place in August. The article, however, didn't give any information about whether Marvel Studios will host their own online gathering.

EXCLUSIVE: After the Hall H triumphant of 2019, Jean-Luc Picard will be back in the Comic-Con house again this year. However, due to concerns and restrictions over the coronavirus pandemic, the Sir Patrick Stewart-led CBS All Access series will be making its appearance remotely at this year’s Comic-Con@Home on July 23.

Comic-Con will be releasing another part of its schedule later today, but, setting phasers to shock and awe, Star Trek: Picard will be the headliner in another behemoth Star Trek Universe panel later this month. That sprawling Trekverse shindig also includes 2020 virtual appearances from Star Trek: Discovery, the lead cast of newest franchise addition Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the August 6th premiering animated Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Helping to kick off the first full day of what would have been SDCC 51, the Trekverse panel starts at 10 AM PT on the 23rd with a welcome and overview from executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin, and moderated by myself.

In the spirit of inclusion and adventures in the final frontier that has always been defined by the Gene Roddenberry created franchise, Secret Hideout’s Kurtzman and Kadin will be followed by a virtual table read of Star Trek: Discovery’s Season 2 finale with Commander Michael Burnham herself Sonequa Martin-Green and the rest of the cast.

Offering up a presentation truly best suited to the format of this year’s Comic-Con, the table read of the first act of the April 18, 2019 streamed ‘Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2’ will include Martin-Green plus Michelle Yeoh (Philippa Georgiou), Doug Jones (Commander Saru), Anthony Rapp (Lt. Commander Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Ensign Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), Mary Chieffo (L’Rell), and Tig Notaro (Commander Jett Reno). Also joining will be Alan Van Sprang (Captain Leland), Jayne Brook (Admiral Katrina Cornwall), and the Discovery Bridge crew Emily Coutts (Lt. Detmer), Oyin Oladejo (Lt. J.G. Owosekun), Patrick Kwok-Choon (Lt. Rhys), Ronnie Rowe Jr. (Lt. J.G. Bryce) and Sara Mitich (Lt. Nilsson).

Additionally, forthcoming Strange New Worlds stars Rebecca Romijn (Number One), Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike), and Ethan Peck (Spock) will be a part of the read with Discovery EP and co-showrunner Michelle Paradise and EP Olatunde Osunsanmi, who helmed the show’s 2-part Season 2 finale. With that much star power in one setting and Discovery getting ready for lift-off on its third season soon-ish, the Q&A following the table read could prove a hard-hitting energy pulse of its own.

Just not at all exciting. Virtual con is zzz to me.

It is hard to get as fired up over "And here are a bunch of videos with celebrities talking with one another!" But I am still going to pop in and see what they have cooking with certain productions.

Spoiler

And admit it - you will too. :baiting:

You know if this is actually successful, many studios are going to drop SDCC given the pricing that it takes to get floorspace.   If they reach 75% of the attention they usually get by spending 1/3rd the cost, I could see more studios gravitate away from SDCC.
