HBO Max has given a series commitment to an original DC drama set in the Gotham City police department, from The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves, Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter, The Batman producer Dylan Clark, and Warner Bros. Television.

Written by Winter, the series is set in the world Reeves is creating for The Batman feature and will build upon the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series will extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of complex characters of Gotham. This marks the first project for Reeves under his recently announced major overall deal with the Warner Bros. Television Group.

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream,” Matt Reeves said.

Kevin Reilly, chief content officer, HBO Max, president TNT, TBS, and TruTV, hinted at the streamer’s long-term plans for an integrated Batman universe.

“Our collaboration with Warner Bros. and DC allows us to elaborate and grow fan connections across these powerful brands for years to come. This is Batman as most audiences have never seen before, and we know fans will want to spend more time in this new world inspired by the film,”  Reilly said.

The Batman TV Spinoff Gotham PD by Matt Reeves Ordered For HBO Max

Quote

The Batman director Matt Reeves is developing a TV spinoff about the Gotham PD for his upcoming Batman reboot for HBO Max. The series will be overseen by Reeves and Terrence Winter (Boardwalk Empire), and "will be set in the world Reeves is creating for the feature film “The Batman,” with the intent being to launch a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. It is said to build on the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City." It is the first project in an overall deal Reeves has with Warner Bros. TV, and marks a bold (but familiar) new expansion of the Batman franchise.

Matt Reeves has issued the following statement about the project (via Warner Bros.):

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream."

At first glance, this new The Batman TV spinoff sounds like it could be a rehash of Fox's Gotham - but the details of this production spell out something decidedly different. Terrence Winter's work on Boardwalk Empire and The Wolf of Wall Street suggests Reeves and WB TV are going with a much darker, grittier, and hard-boiled tone for this version of the Gotham Police Department, and the city they must patrol. It's a bold choice for WB TV right now when the entire world is in a heated debate about the state of policing, and the systemic flaws and/or corruption that may lie therein. The Batman spinoff show's tone also informs us more about the kind of world Matt Reeves is creating in The Batman, which is now even more intriguing with its hard-boiled Noir inspirations.

HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television are going to have to find someone else to preside over Gotham P.D. Terence Winter, who was in line to write and showrun the forthcoming spinoff series of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” feature, has exited the project over creative differences, Variety has confirmed.

News of his departure comes five months after the show was handed a straight-to-series order at HBO Max. It also comes less than 24 hours after another Winter project came out of the woodwork in the form of a “Dial M For Murder” anthology series starring Alicia Vikander.

The untitled Gotham P.D. show will be set in the world Reeves is creating for the feature film, with the intent being to launch a new Batman universe across WarnerMedia multiple platforms. It is said to build on the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City. It is the first project announced under Reeves’ new overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group.

HBO Max and WBTV declined to comment on Winter’s exit.

Winter leaving the project represents a significant loss for the show given his prodigious track record of working on expansive, gritty crime dramas like “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire.” When the series order was announced, Reeves described working with Winter as “an absolute dream.”

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford,” Reeves also said.

The Gotham P.D. series is one of a number of DC project currently in the pipeline at HBO Max, as the streamer is leaning heavily into the DC Comics IP controlled by parent company WarnerMedia. Of particular note is that James Gunn is working on a series spinoff of his “Suicide Squad” film with John Cena attached to star, and that J.J Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions are developing a “Justice League Dark” series for the streamer.

Giri/Haji creator Joe Barton is heading to Gotham to take over showrunning duties on HBO Max’s upcoming The Batman TV series.

The British writer has joined the series as showrunner and exec producer following the departure of Terence Winter in November.

It was understood that the Boardwalk Empire creator left the series, which is a companion to Matt Reeves Batman feature film, over creative differences.

Barton is best known for creating Tokyo and London-set crime drama Giri/Haji for Netflix and the BBC. He also wrote on AMC and Channel 4 sci-fi drama Humans and Netflix and BBC epic drama Troy: Fall of a City. Other projects include Sky thriller Extinction and an adaptation of Sally Green’s Half Bad with Andy Serkis for Netflix.

HBO Max gave a series commitment to the project last summer. It is designed to build upon the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. Focused on the Gotham police department, the series will extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad complex characters of Gotham.

Reeves in August said that the series is a prequel to his Batman Year Two movie, with the show set in Batman Year One when a “masked vigilante…starts to unsettle the city”. The series will zero in on the city’s corruption that “goes back many years” and is told from the POV of a crooked cop, Reeves said in August.

It comes from Reeves’ 6th & Idaho in association with Warner Bros. Television. Reeves, Barton and The Batman producer Dylan Clark are executive producers, alongside 6th & Idaho’s Daniel Pipski and Adam Kassan. 6th & Idaho’s Rafi Crohn is a co-executive producer. It is based on characters created for DC by Bob Kane with Bill Finger.

Barton is represented by ICM Partners, Grandview and Independent Talent Group.

Translating to Duty/Shame and set in both Tokyo and London, "Giri/Haji" is a thriller about a Tokyo detective named Kenzo Mori, scouring the London underworld to find his allegedly deceased brother, Yuto. Yuto was accused of brutally murdering the nephew of a yakuza member, which could lead to the onset of a gang war. Kenzo's investigation into the disappearance lures him into dangerous elements of the corrupt underworld of London's criminal circuit. Starring an international ensemble cast, the series originally aired on BBC2.

The world of The Batman will expand beyond the theatrical reboot from star Robert Pattinson and director Matt Reeves, but will also receive a major tie-in with the HBO Max series focused on the Gotham PD. Reeves will produce the series with Joe Barton serving as showrunner on the project, but it seems unlikely that Pattinson's Bruce Wayne will appear in the series however HBO content chief Casey Bloys did mention it's possible for Jeffrey Wright to show up as Batman ally Jim Gordon. Casey Bloys recently spoke up about how the film and series will tie together.

The Batman won't be the only DC Comics movie getting a TV spinoff, as The Suicide Squad is also getting a Peacemaker series from director James Gunn and star John Cena. Bloys told TheWrap they won't be reserving characters just for TV or movies anymore.

"That's the idea. Matt Reeves is obviously a producer on Gotham City PD. We don't want to reserve characters just for films or for TV. There should be kind of some fluidity between them. So that is the idea. I mean, we're in very early stages on that. So I don't want to suggest that any one character will be. But yes, that is, generally speaking, that is the idea, that there will be crossover."

While there hasn’t been a great deal of news about this show yet, that’s about to change. We at The Illuminerdi have some new information about the upcoming HBO Max series, and we’re excited to share with you what we know!

TWO NEW CHARACTERS COMING TO GOTHAM PD

The Gotham City PD series is currently looking for its two lead characters, both of whom we have descriptions for.

  • The lead female character is black, 35-45 years old, and a former detective who becomes the new Gotham District Attorney
  • The male lead is a 30-40 year old white police detective who works for Commissioner James Gordon.

We also know that the show is confirmed to tie directly into Matt Reeves’ The Batman and will begin shooting in Summer 2021.

Looking at who the two leads may be, the most likely guesses are Marcus Driver and Janice Porter from Gotham Central. Both characters have a rich history in the Caped Crusader’s comic run, and they should be interesting heroes to center the new HBO Max series on.

Gotham PD begins shooting this summer, so it will hopefully only be a matter of time before talent begins attaching itself to the cast. There is still no word on when it will release, although the hope is that it will be close to the March 2022 release of The Batman. No matter how the details turn out, it’s exciting to know that things are starting to come together for this intriguing new DCEU series.

NEW TITLE FOR THE BATMAN SPIN-OFF SERIES
According to our sources it looks like the untitled Gotham PD series may finally have a new working title, Arkham. The series is said to not only be a prequel to the highly anticipated The Batman taking place during the vigilante’s first year, but from the perspective of a corrupt Gotham police officer. But what could the working title Arkham mean?

The title Arkham opens up a lot of interesting possibilities. With the series said to take place before The Batman during the Dark Knight’s first year as an active vigilante this could be an indication that Gotham will be at its worst. The Batman will feature a number of Batman’s rogues in their early years including a different version of Riddler, Catwoman, and Penguin before he is the kingpin of Gotham. Could the series also feature the early years of the asylum before Batman’s rogues are the main inhabitants.

Arkham Asylum has long been corrupt and the spin-off series is expected to follow a corrupt member of the GCPD, perhaps the two are connected. In the Fox series Gotham, detective Jim Gordon, was briefly assigned to guard duty at the Asylum which could be a way to bring the hospital into the forefront of the series.

The title Arkham could also be indicative of the chaos of Gotham during Batman’s first year. Showrunner Joe Barton, when answering a fan’s question on twitter, revealed that “there are no good cops” in Gotham and he has also made it clear that this series will be “very different” than the Fox series Gotham. He explained that he “wouldn’t be that interested in remaking a show that ended like 5 minutes ago.” Arkham, like Gotham, is synonymous with Batman, but how exactly the asylum for the criminally insane comes into play in the series is still a mystery.

I read that earlier today from DC Direct and dismissed it as another critic inserting their thinking into story direction.

But hearing this that confirms it.
