just got bit by the 9.8 to 9.6.bug.   A cbcs 9.8 New mutants 98 sent in for Claremont is coming back a 9.6!!!!  Too many people commenting how they have tougher 9.8 criteria than CGC.  :blahblah:

From reading some of the posts below, since the book came back as a CGC 9.6 graded copy after the signing, it might actually have been graded by them as a 9.9 copy the first time before going through the standard wear and tear process of being signed.  hm

So, maybe the other company does indeed have a tougher 9.8 grading criteria.

Yep. Wanted to say something to this effect.  Haven't there been lots of posts about cracked books subbed for sigs coming back lower? In some instances much lower then .2 points if I recall. CGC says...?

Yup there’s always a risk cracking and handling a NM book would drop a grade artists fingerprints bends etc... handling a dinged corner etc.. so much can happen

I finally wrote that long due post. This has nothing to do with CBCS vs CGC, it's all about people not knowing the risks. It takes almost nothing for a 9.8 to be a 9.6 and yet people send them out for someone else to crack a slab, pull out a book from a sealed sleeve, put it in a window box and pass it around for someone to pres a pen on.

They better hope those hands are clean as well and that your book isn’t the first to bat after lunch lol

Joking aside, would a sig really add that much more value to a 9.9?

Besides the additional potential grade reducing handling done during the signing, pressing, and grading processes, grading is not a science and very subjective.  hm

What's the chance the now signed former 9.9 graded book could come back in a grade whereby it loses most of its value?  :tonofbricks:

To borrow a line from our own economics professor, Boston Corbett's infamous NM 98 CGC 9.9 thread.....................Thus endeth the lesson!!!  lol

Would you add all the grading/pressing/sig fees to the total FMV of the book?

In that case I would add about $160 on top of FMV on a UCX 266 9.8 recently signed by Claremont
