One argument I've heard is that they do that to drive views to other items (I'm not sure what mental gymnastics you have to do as a seller to arrive at that conclusion).

The other, more plausible reason, is that everything has a price.  The buyer would like to keep it, but is willing to part with it for the right price.  If someone comes along and offers $50k for a card, so be it.  Otherwise, merely listing an item costs no money or opportunity cost for something you're otherwise hoping to keep.

There is also a set of the 1987 for $4,000+

I think they are fishing for a sucker with those prices though. I have no experience buying anything like that 10.0 psa stuff.

I read this on website before and tried it on item I know how much it sold for, I don't think it works.

So ebay is being dishonest or have very bad bug.  This lead to perceive higher market value for items, so item sell for more and ebay get more from sales.

That’s why you have to run it through another site for Best Offer Items. It comes up with the actual amount sold.

It works for Best Offer listings.  That one does not appear to be Best Offer.
