What Was The First Mail-Order Comic You Purchased? 1 1

Living on a farm five miles from a town of less than 150 people, there weren't a lot of opportunities for me to buy back issues.

Well, I finally worked up the nerve to buy a book without any guidance from my parents. On second thought, I probably did this so my parents wouldn't tell me that I was wasting money on a "comic book".

I'm don't remember who I ordered this from, but my guess would be Howard Rogofsky. I also don't remember it cost, but I'm sure I paid in cash. In all likelihood, several coins taped to an index card.

Having never ordered anything from a mail-order catalog, I had no idea how long I would have to wait. I think I waited about a week, and then I started racing out to the mailbox every day hoping to receive my book. After what seemed to be an eternity, it finally arrived.

Here it is, in all its glory - Metal Men #11. Why did I pick this particular issue? I'm not sure, but it probably had something to do with it having a low price and actually being available to be sold.

So, how about the rest of you? Anyone else want to share their first mail-order experience?

I signed something at a comic con, and a few weeks later, a big, thick Comic Heaven catalog arrived. It was a mail in auction, and minimum bids were provided. In blissful ignorance, I threw a minimum bid at half a dozen low grade SA big boys, thinking it would be great to win one. 
 

Of course, I won all of them. I was flabbergasted, and on the hook for about $850. A figure that, to this day, is among my top 5 most expensive comic purchases ever. I still have a couple of the books!

i subscribed to FOOM when i was a kid , so that was my first mail order comic

Avengers 144 NM $4 a friend had given me 141-143 and 145-151. I had no idea what the cover even looked like. Being able to finish that first Squadron Supreme storyline was much appreciated.

DC Eighty Page Giant 5,  Batman issue. I ordered it from a dealer named Dave Hunt in upstate NY, who doesn't seem to be around anymore. I think it cost 10 bucks. I was 10. I saw the ad for the dealer in a comic, and his catalogue was ten cents. I couldn't pass that up. It was 1975.
