To his defense he knew nothing about comics. He originally sent me this pic to demonstrate the nice packing he was doing, but I expressed concern about it being loose (free to jostle left and right, potentially damaging corners). I recommended a bag and the sandwiching technique. I probably should have left it alone, not sure which would have been worse...

He tried...

Definitely would have been more secure had you not interfered:baiting:

Got this in the mail...yes, you are seeing a raw book (no bag) sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard, and the non-spine end of the book resting against (slightly adhered to) the packing tape. My heart sank when I saw it but with my trusty utility knife, and taking my time, I was able to avoid damage. That’s not to say damage didn’t occur during shipping though, but if any did it was minor (I suspect cover scuffs from no bag). Good thing it wasn’t high grade...

Tend to agree...:tonofbricks: BUT it would have been loose. I honestly thought he was going to take my suggestion and then insert in his impressively foamed box. lol

Oh well, it survived.

Was it just in an envelope?

Is this someone who is regularly selling? Maybe reaching out to them with some youtube link or CGC forum links on the finer points of safely packing comics might stave off many more comics being subjected to potentially devastating damage by improper packing. :wishluck:   Ebay links also for sellers of bags and boards.

I tried to find the old CGC shipping instructions so I could forward to him, but I think they replaced it with an advertisement for their new shipping "kits". I couldn't believe it...or maybe I just wasn't looking in the right place. I thought it was in their FAQ...

And no, he's most certainly not on these boards. Just a "found some comics in an attic" guy...

at least it was between cardboard. I have had way too many people just mail me old comics in an envelope with nothing.  Especially in the  pre internet pre ebay days when I would put ads for old comics in the classifieds and stuff and I was just a young kid that never thought to tell them to pack it good. I also had so many people mail me comics rolled in a cardboard tube. People here would have a heart attack too in the old days seeing piles of old comics on tables at flea markets just out in the weather with covers blowing open in the wind lol

This got mailed to me just in a thin envelope with nothing that's why there is a crease on the upper left...

You buy enough stuff on ebay, you'll eventually get something shipped in a flimsy envelope with no added protection, and no bag. Fortunately for me, it's only happened to low grade inexpensive stuff, and if the books picked up additional damage I couldn't tell. I did get a slab shipped from the U.K. once that was dropped into a thin paper mailer that barely fit, and that was all. Fortunately it arrived without a scratch.
