Marvelous In Every Moment: A Tribute To Sal Buscema

He could capture the rage monster look of the character really well.

A good replacement for Herb Trimpe in the 70s.

Nothing depicts a massive blow like the word "FROM"....

Yup. It doesn’t work as a sound effect, but you have to respect experimentation.

I always thought Sal was under-appreciated compared to John.  The first book I bought was Defenders 2 and the cover hooked me.  And call me crazy, which many have including myself, but his Valkyrie was hot.

Picture?

Here’s a Gil Kane cover with John Romita alterations, particularly clear on Werewolf’s face...

Compare with the even more feral-looking original by Kane...

If you are talking about the Defenders 2, I still have it and I have posted it before but here it is again.  I still think it a damned good cover.

If you mean Valkyrie, one of personal favs is Avengers 83 - my copy below the Defenders

My god, I snafued - that is John's cover not Sal's. doh!

I am such a newb but here is one image with a quick search.

I do agree with Paul @Ken Aldred that I felt John was more polished and accomplished but Sal was a stalwart and still favorite of mine.

While we are on the subject, can anyone tell me what book this picture comes from? I want it.

Top-of-my-head guess: Hulk 214 / 217 / 219 or 220.

It looks like Ernie Chan inks over Buscema. I think EC inked Buscema from about 210-220.

Seems like the Hulk was in the water a *lot* in these issues!

But it could also be Alfredo Alcala inks (which would be Hulk 221)
