What’s up with changing board handles as of late? I’m starting to feel unique in never contemplating the shift...

I ponder, is everyone doing this? Is this the new thing? Is this a generational trend where people come in and do rapid fire garbage posts to bring their post count up, and then pivot to a new handle to wipe their trail clean and pose as respectable members?

I sense it’s probably as innocent as “hey it’s time for a change” more often than not, but I’m seeing a lot of unfamiliar boardies with high post counts lately.... And sometimes, personalities are so strong, I can decipher who they once were... And other times, it’s just plain confusing...

Oh well.. I too changed my name once. It was originally my email account name.

I originally created that when AOL first kicked off and offered those free dial up packages.  But when I started my ebay account I changed to the more apt

which has since stuck and do not see any reason to change it.

I wish for a month or so, the board software would show the old name.  I live in a constant state of confusion anyway.  Heck, I get muddled up when someone changes their avatar alone.  If they do both their name and avatar at the same time

Its hard enough remembering passwords for all the various sites I have accounts on. Using different names would just be adding to the grief.

Never done it, not the guy to ask...

But who’s doing it is an ironic question... Hard to tell, especially when they change avatars too...as someone else pointed out. I know a few but am not going to call them out...

Not sure if it changes on their historic posts or if those are locked in stone with the handle used when originally posted?

If you go to any board members profile page, you'll see a little circular clock / arrow symbol to the immediate right of their board name - see @Callaway29's below:

 

Click on that and it brings up the history of the users name changes like so:

 

There was a period of about a year where name changes didn't register but that was fixed in an update last year if I recall correctly. So no need to wonder any longer who everyone is.

If you want to change your board name by the way, here is an old post of mine showing how it's done. You retain the same history - it's no different to changing your avatar:

Wow didn’t know name histories were tracked, nor do I remember changing the first letter of my handle from lowercase to uppercase.  Thanks!
