Popular Post rrichards Posted September 15, 2020 Popular Post Share Posted September 15, 2020 Back in the late seventies Jack Kirby did a strip based on the Disney movie, "The Black Hole " that was nationally syndicated. In the nineties I picked up the complete series of published color newspaper strips from a guy on ebay. I have since parted with that collection but did have the foresight to photograph and save copies of these pages as they were too big for my scanner. I did loan these out to the Kirby Museum at one point and there is a french copy of this series rumored to be available but as best of my knowledge this is the only place on the web where you can view the entire 26 installments I have made these available to board members in the past and I am doing that again . RBerman Posted September 16, 2020 Share Posted September 16, 2020 The 1979 Black Hole film is also streaming on Disney+. I hadn't seen it in a long time, but we started it with the kids last week. It was a misfire, but fun now to analyze how it struggled to be a hard sci fi film on the one hand (It spends spends 20 minutes at the beginning with the crew navigating away from the black hole's pull and docking with the USS Cygnus, before any hint of a human antagonist materializes.) and a post-Star Wars kiddie action movie on the other hand, with cute robots, plastic-armored stormtroopers, and laser shootouts. It didn't have enough action for the Star Wars crowd, but it was a really moody picture with great music and some really striking character designs. I group it with some of the other "kids" movies of the time that were way more adult than any adult probably realized.
