It was a nice cold morning but the weather warmed up rather quickly by the afternoon. The warmth in the room could be felt as old camaraderies and old friends came together to see each other after what felt like a very long time. It was not only art exchanged but conversations and stories of past and everyone checking on each other and their families. The art in the room was amazing as always there were eight dealers who were set up with a mixture of modern and old Art. The biggest displays belonged to Bechara, Albert and Anthony’s comic art. Prices as we expect to continue to rise and it’s not a surprise that most dealers have priced strong because it’s very difficult to replace items. As collectors we may have become used to seeing pieces sell cheap which has jaded us from buying today. But the more you look around the room you see there’s a lot more youth in this hobby then there was before. Some people say that we are still in a very young state of the hobby while others will say that we’re close to a bubble. I don’t know which way it is either way but there are definitely good buys out there as long as you’re not looking for Steve Ditko or Jack Kirby Premier splashes or pages. For vintage art overall it seems there’s a lot more DC art and there is marvel art. X-Men is very limited supply and is usually picked up very quickly. There is always a good abundance of modern Art available at some of the dealers at various prices. There’s good buys it can be hard definitely if you look through Anthony‘s portfolios there’s some really good pages that not too much money. It’s always great to see some beautiful illustration art at the shows. I saw a few beautiful examples of Frazetta at as well as art by Wallywood. The Buscema pinup that recently sold was in attendance too. The fears of the hobby definitely continue. Many people who are selling are fearful that they’re under pricing some things so the prices are often well above what the market value is. When buying pieces many collectors will refer to different sources and speak to other collectors to see if the price is within reason. It’s an understandable fear but at the same token I feel like the way the market is going as long as you love the piece the market will continue to rise with it. Remember that some of the prices that we saw in 2012 and 2015 were considered high but when you look back today they would be bargains. And for many dealers to replace the Art that they have they have to pay up for it as well and that may reflect into the price that they’re asking. Joe and his team did a great job keeping public safety in mind with limiting how many people are in the room at a time. Temperature checks are being done and everybody was required to wear a mask. Hand sanitizer was plentiful. I felt very comfortable at the show and hope we can have another sooner than later! I REALLY dig the Byrne Alpha Flight poster art, I’m sure I wouldn’t dig the price tho! Stefanomjr Posted September 20, 2020 Share Posted September 20, 2020 I was there - got there right before 11am - had to wait maybe 30 minutes in line for the room. Max capacity was 50 people. Moy was mobbed! I was pleasantly surprised to see he had a recent HA auction piece from Sean Murphy's Batman White Knight for sale for $3500. Joe did a great job making sure that the show was in compliance with state mandates. Everyone followed the rules it seemed. Eight dealers: Anthony Snyder, Albert Moy, Bechara Maalouf, Nathan Rose, Brad Savage, Hans, Will Gabri-El, and another dealer of collectibles and art and comics, who I didn't know. It was great to be back among comic art fans. Big rush in the morning, full capacity, then it trickled down. I think a lot of NYC fans and others too, are still reluctant to attend these type of more social events. I hope that changes soon. I thought asking prices were (too) high and sellers unwilling to budge. I came home without spending a penny, though I was certainly there with the intent of pick up something. I like seeing stuff priced. I get tired of asking prices. Most stuff was not priced. Some pricing seemed to depend on whim, the day of the week, the way the wind blows, and any number of other unimportant factors. Today' 14K is yesterday's 9K is tomorrows ?? it's kind of fun. Ask ten times, get five different answers. When you get the price you like, take it, if not, pass. I later spoke to a few collectors who went, and as Ankur said previously, there is generally a dealer fear of leaving money on the table, so prices are high. (Maybe they should fear collectors spending that convention money at auction instead!) If you really MUST HAVE something fair enough. But otherwise prices were high enough to pass on and wait for another day, rather than sellers lowering prices a bit and closing a deal.
