CGC recognizing source material for designations on the label unrelated to grading

Wondering if CGC should identify on the label (front or back) or even grading notes perhaps, the source for a designation like SOTI, Classic Cover, Classic Story, etc. It’s not the job of a grading company to make designations that are unrelated to grading the comic book, especially in the area of classic covers, without somewhere acknowledging the source material for the designation. There are classic cover designations that aren’t in Overstreet on the CGC label and I can’t find any source material for how or where CGC decided that a cover was classic or a classic cover supported by traditional sources of material wasn’t. At least CGC should recognize that any determination not based on recognized source material is the grading company’s own decision based on specified criteria. After all, CGC bases it’s grading on specified criteria and we (in most cases) know and trust the grade given on the book overall. Shouldn’t the same principle hold true for information placed on the label unrelated to the grade? Information on the label should always be accurate and we know this starts with the grade thanks to a trust collectors have with CGC based on accepted parameters in grading and the criteria used. Information placed on the label unrelated to the grade should be based on some relative decision-making process. Otherwise, CGC should simply stick to just having the basic information that includes grade, pq, publisher, artist and writer where noted on or inside the cover since this can be confirmed during the grading process, and publishing date.  The same holds true for information CGC does not place on the label but should.

Perhaps, one solution would be for CGC to officially identify the sources relied upon for designation on the label unrelated to grading somewhere on its website if the company wants to stick with the current practice and note this on the back of the label?

This would be handy for comics like Capes #1 and ASM #365, where for some reason one is labeled a preview while the other [equally paged preview] is labeled a 1st appearance. Did CGC decide this, or did money?

The motto at CGC used to be to include any information on the label that would help sell the book. That would help explain why there is information on the CGC label that isn't found anywhere else. As far as finding out where that information came from, that's something that even the most knowledgeable and dedicated employee would have a hard time figuring out.

So while I agree with you, the actual process of doing what you suggest would be a monumental task which would undoubtedly require time and effort that's not available in the grading room...

TaTs would get even longer and given the track record of inconsistencies of the information on the labels, I have little confidence that they would get it right most of the time.

Perhaps it would be more fruitful for CGC to concentrate on improving QA and TaT.

Thanks for your (as always) excellent insight! Do you think it would be difficult for CGC to indicate somewhere on its website that "source material for information on the CGC label unrelated to grading may derive from but are not limited to the following: Overstreet Price Guide; Grand Comics Database, etc. ?"

That doesn't sound too difficult...
