So what do you think of this direct / newsstand thing?

I understand why people go for them. Collectors LOVE a challenge, and anything that makes the chase tougher and more interesting is going to appeal to a pretty big subset of us.

Newsttands, price variants, multiple covers never did much for me, but newsstand plus double covers? That's the way to go. My extensive collection of these shown below:

The mystery of the newsstand with double cover?  That sounds like a hard case!

Yikes, that's an incredible book.

I don't have many newstands left.  I sold them eons ago because they weren't high grade enough.  The copies on the spinner rack at my local convenience store were less than pristine.

Here's one of my few keepers.  Definitely not a 9.8 let alone a 9.0.

Then we have the Canadian price variant copies as well in this mix.  Thethread in the Copper fourm is pretty fun.

And it's funny that the only copy od ASM 300 I have is actually a news stand one (by chance).

Thankfully, no Canadian variant of ASM #300. (thumbsu

Well, mine was actually purchased by me off the newsstand here in Canada.  Pedigree at least now maybe? ;)

A pedigree for books from 1988? hm  Seems about 40 years too early.

All good fun :)

I am really bothered by this spidey head. Is it Man-Thing under there?

I think Spider-Man is having trouble trying to battle the bad guy and avert his eyes from Black Widow's "points of interest" at the same time.

I always hated it when artists did the nose thing on Spidey and this one is one of the absolute worst.

Man-Thing lol

I spit my tea out at that one Bird

Fun fact, Lionel Richie wrote "Dancing On The Ceiling" after having a dream about Australians.

So yeah there's a good reason people will pay a healthy premium for an ASM 300 9.8 barcode copy!

It may be a reason, but it's not a good one (tsk)

Math, it's what's for dinner.

I guess I should've quoted the whole thing. His underlying reason had nothing to do with math, it was more of a fantasy about the life of a comic.

Fantasy? The life of the comic is the reason for the math. So it's both.

lol No, just fantasy. A 9.8 Newsstand likely had basically the same life as a 9.8 Direct. Direct editions were not printed on special precision machines and then carefully removed and individually delivered in foam-encased Mylars and fullbacks to secure locations where they could not be touched until purchased. :eyeroll: A Direct edition from any age had ample opportunity to suffer damage even before making it to the store racks.

I don't much understand the direct/newsstand collecting thing, but I learned long ago not to judge someone else's collecting preferences.

I don't know why anybody would care about the collecting preferences of others... unless they were trying to change them so they could sell them something. But I certainly hope those sellers would not mislead people in every any way.

This may be of interest for anyone interested in actual numbers that are broken out into a census instead of just opinions. Its obviously not cgc and it's a small sample size but its better than nothing. This is an updated version of the link someone posted on page 1.

@valiantman I don't know if you've seen this "population report" but it might be right up your alley. https://rarecomics.wordpress.com/2020/05/16/newsstand-rarity-by-year-cbcs-census/

Its some interesting reading and you gotta do some scrolling on the site to get to the relevant numbers but here's a screenshot of a chart where he charts 9.8s for 3 titles (ASM Uncanny X-men Incredible Hulk) from the years listed.

Screenshot_20201010-004954_Chrome.thumb.jpg.6d86e23ebe98a2ecf2c106a70901de1d.jpg

I'd love to see the census information on ASM 300 9.8 but for whatever reason they won't accept my email so I can't create an account :(

Anyway think this might be helpful.
