Seduction of the Innocent is a book by American psychiatrist Fredric Wertham, published in 1954, that warned that comic books were a negative form of popular literature and a serious cause of juvenile delinquency. This first printing has the publisher's circled "R" colophon on the copyright page. It is omitted from later printings. This first state of the first printing includes the concluding "Bibliographical Note", which is a 2 page list of comic publishers. (removed from this copy, see photo) Fearing lawsuits from those listed, this leaf was cut out from most copies of the first printing before shipping. It would be omitted entirely from subsequent printings. Wertham examines the pre-code comics and the effects their violent and sexual imagery were purportedly having on children. Illustrated with provocative black & white examples, with Wertham's negative commentary. 397 pages.
