It will be interesting to see whether this effect trickles down to 9.4/9.6 slabs, but so far those are still hanging out broadly in the $60-80ish range that a lot of random slabs go for. Still a lot better than the ~$30 (or less) slabs that are signs of absolutely zero interest, though. So there's some possibility...

Doubtful that it's speculation. Nobody would buy in at that price if there isn't a reason to. It likely has to do with the black cover of the book and 21 9.8s on the census.

35 is pure grade chasing.  Frankly, there should not be any 9.8s, all the copies I’ve ever seen, including the slabbed 9.8s, were damaged in production and have at least two very visible color breaking spine stresses.

It’s the quintessential dollar bin book selling for stupid money in 9.8.  Speaking as a Wolverine enthusiast, the story isn’t even all that good.

Maybe largely grade chasing, once ‘tough in 9.8’ or ‘difficult black cover’ gets attached to a certain issue, an obsession then exacerbated by film or TV speculation.

I know this looks like i'm trying to find comics to hunt for in 2022 when I go to a LCS or comic show again, but I'm more just curious.  

GI Joe 26 1st Printing 60 cent cover has never been a dollar book.  It was the first origin of Snake Eyes and outlined the relationship between Snake Eyes and Stormshadow as well as the background behind the Arashkage Ninja Clan.

GI Joe 26 2nd Printing 75 cent cover has been a dollar book given the abundance of comic packs that were on TRU comic racks during the time.  

The book has popped in the last year due to the Snake Eyes origin movie that is supposed to be released.  However, I am with you that $750 with 12 watchers on eBay for a 9.8 is a little bit loco.

No one paid attention to grade then like they do now for books like lois lane, jimmy olsen or even a lot of SA superman.  "Who cares wut grade it's in it's lois lane #98"

I paid about $50/ea for some 9.8s that are $1 in raw condition...

I got 'em to get 'em signed as 9.8s, though.
