Morning All

what is the thought on what to do with poly bag comics ? For value purpose in general is it better to remove or keep sealed ?

thanks

I open them, but keep the bag (if there are any graphics on them) and whatever is inside. I use a razor to slice the bag as close to the top as possible so it's as intact as possible. If re-selling at some point, I can include the bag with the purchase.

I think it helps to look up whether or not they are rare. With moderns there is less of a premium, if any, but with multipacks, especially from the bronze and copper ages, there can be a huge premium, depending on the books. Those are usually purchased to keep in the bag, which is different from many moderns.

It depends on my purpose for buying the book. If I'm buying it to read, usually I'll just purchase an already opened copy. If I'm buying the comic for any other reason I'll always keep it sealed. I'd consider a polybagged comic in a mylar more well preserved than cutting one open and having it graded, as that's how it was originally presented on the shelf.

Ever since I read about the bagged Death of Superman causing damage to the actual comic, I've been wary about keeping comics inside poly bags. And even more since CGC opens the bags to grade the comics.

What I do if I think a bagged comic will be valuable is I'll get two or three copies. That way I'll have both examples. I still have my Death of Superman bagged. But that's just for nostalgia.

You shouldn't be sending a bagged book in to be graded in the first place. Take that sucker out of the bag and examine it first to see if it's worthy of grading.

I wish I had know this sooner.  I have some that are so damaged by the polybag that even a pressing won’t fix it completely.  I could be wrong, but do Ultimate Fallout #4’s sell for more when they’re still sealed?

doubtful if 9.0's go for $200+

https://comics.gocollect.com/guide/view/940391

I would guestimate the book straight out of a fresh nice poly would still be only about 9.0 or 9.2, it's definitely or well seemingly a press book

But I feel you, I didn't press mine either and it did come back 9.0, but also, I can see non pressable defects on it so :wishluck:

I know. I meant that CGC will open them anyway. So you should check before you send it in so you aren't surprised by the grade.

I put all my polybagged books in a bag and board and stored them with my collection in regular long boxes. Last year I started slabbing books and, since CGC removes the polybag when grading, I decided to open a few of my books so I could grade them and clean and press before sending them to CGC.

Not one book was clean and damage free. Some books like X-Force 1 included two trading cards loose in each bag which scratches and dents the covers. The bag seams will dent the entire book vertically.

Don’t leave them in the polybag. Save the original bag and any inserts in a separate bag and board with the book but remove it. Here are some pics of what a polybagged comic looks like when removed after 20 years

Damn bags do more damage than I thought. I guess I better start taking them out of their bags. I'll still leave the Death of Superman bagged though. Just nostalgia. It's been like that so I'll keep that one.

Dang nice press jobs!  You use any humidity, steel plates etc?  I have just started pressing with a lower end clamp press recently with not much luck as I still haven't gotten the metal plates recommended by many on a pressing FB page, or made a humidity tank to help make the paper more pliable and in turn achieve better results.

The poly bags on UF 4 were pretty bad.  I had 4 copies and pulled them all out immediately after I purchased in a back issue box about a couple years after they had been printed I think.  Most sellers were selling sealed copies as "NM or better" when it started blowing up, but there is no way to grade a book properly inside a reflective bag under normal artificial light; it is impossible.  Of the 4 copies I had, 1 was about an 8.5, another a 9.0. The other two were 9.2 and 9.4 respectively.  The backs had the indent from the polybag seal to some degree or another, and there was a print wrinkle right above Caps' head on all the copies I believe.  You could not see this through the bag.  Even better was the Satan's Sodomy Baby II from Albatross came in a very form fitting type shrink-wrap bag almost.  I got about 10 copies of that from different sources and not one grades above about 9.2 right out the bag!  Again sellers were listing as "NM or better" knowing full well none were actually NM or better.  Always take these books out of those bags, and as other have stated, just keep the bag and possible contents in a separate bag. If you sell later you can always ship the peripherals with it, and you have graded a book competently, not just guessing or using wishful thinking to make a sale.  On a side note, I thought CGC didn't take poly-bagged books, do they?  I thought they had to be shipped to them free of the bag.

If you send a book to CGC they will remove the polybag or you can remove it before sending it,
