I forgot there is not only an Army of the Dead animated spin-off but also a prequel before the actual show comes out.

Dave Bautista will reprise his role for the anime, while Matthias Schweighöfer will direct and star in the prequel movie.

Introducing the Army of the Dead cinematic universe.

Director Zack Snyder, who's currently working on his "Snyder Cut" of Justice League for HBO Max, is now spawning a film prequel and anime series for Netflix to expand the world establish in his upcoming zombie heist flick.

Army of the Dead, featuring an international cast that includes Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista, follows a group of mercenaries as they venture into zombie-infested Las Vegas to pull off the greatest heist ever. Matthias Schweighöfer plays a character named Ludwig Dieter, who will be the focus of the prequel movie. Schweighöfer will also direct and star in that film, which Snyder will help produce with wife Deborah.

The anime series will be titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and feature an origin story for Bautista's Scott and his rescue crew as they confront the mysterious source of the zombie outbreak during the initial fall of Las Vegas. Bautista and fellow Army of the Dead actors Ana de la Reguera, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick, and Ella Purnell will reprise their roles.

Jay Oliva of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns will showrun the anime series and direct two episodes. Snyder will also direct two episodes, as well as join the executive producers team with Deborah.

Shay Hatten, one of the writers who developed the screenplay for Army of the Dead, will pen both new projects.

"I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to partner with Netflix again as we expand the Army of the Dead universe with both an international prequel, as well as exploring the visually dynamic world of animation," Snyder said in a statement. "It’s been a great collaboration and we are thrilled that Netflix sees this as big of an IP as we do."

Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead prequel gets a title: Army of Thieves. Army of the Dead is set to hit Netflix this May with a vast ensemble cast, some of whom will be appearing in the prequel film. Matthias Schweighöfer, who will star as Ludwig Dieter in both Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves, is taking over directing duties for the prequel. Joining him in the film are castmates Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones), Guz Khan, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin (Miss Scarlet and the Duke), and Jonathan Cohen.

Army of Thieves is set to follow the characters from Army of the Dead prior to their dangerous heist in the Nevada desert. The film will take place during the early days of the viral outbreak that leads to the zombie apocalypse. Netflix's confidence in Army of the Dead and its franchise potential is clear - in addition to the prequel film, the streamer is also producing an Army of the Dead animated prequel series, the details for which are scarce.

With Army of the Dead getting a brand new trailer, Snyder has finally revealed the title of the upcoming prequel film during a Q&A after the release of the Army of the Dead trailer. Army of Thieves will focus heavily on Ludwig Dieter's backstory. Snyder says the focus of the film will be on how Dieter fell in love with cracking safes and reveal how the safe in Army of the Dead is significant to the character.

In some ways, it sounds like Army of Thieves could be more of a traditional zombie film, taking place during the initial outbreak and following the characters as they grapple with a changing world. Still, Snyder is not one for tradition so it certainly seems like there will be a twist to film akin to the one recently revealed in Army of the Dead. It's unclear if the evolved zombies shown in the trailer for Army of the Dead will play a part in Army of Thieves or not, but it's certainly not out of the question.

Matthias Schweighöfer teases the "crazy" backstory of his Army of the Dead character Dieter, which will be revealed in the prequel movie Army of Thieves. Set to arrive in theaters this Friday ahead of next week's Netflix debut, director Zack Snyder's latest zombie movie Army of the Dead will combine a heist adventure with the undead in violent, colorful fashion. The film sees a group of mercenaries venture into the zombie hot spot of Las Vegas with the goal of grabbing a multimillion dollar prize from beneath a casino. Led by Dave Bautista's Scott Ward, Army of the Dead is made up for a large, compelling ensemble.

Screen Rant received the opportunity to speak to Schweighöfer about Army of the Dead, though we couldn't resist looking for some teases about Thieves. Schweighöfer gave a little update about where he's at with the project and also hyped up Dieter's backstory. He said:

Matthias Schweighöfer: "Oh, yeah. I just finished a prequel for my character, so everything is in that film. But the biography was that Dieter was - I can't say that, because it's a spoiler alert. You will love the prequel. His way to America is awesome. It's crazy."

With Schweighöfer wrapping up work on Army of Thieves soon, Netflix could perhaps set a release date for later this year. The early reactions to Army of the Dead singled out Schweighöfer as an MVP, and the release of that film could increase excitement for the prequel. Plus, Dead could provide some clues about what to expect from Army of Thieves.

While Zack Snyder just released an official look at the new film via his Twitter account, it seems that eager fans can expect to see a lot more at this month’s Comic-Con@Home. Amongst several new Netflix offerings, the official SDCC website has listed an Army of the Dead virtual panel on July 25th from 2:00-3:00 pm PT. Check out the official description for the panel below:

"Army of the Dead was only the beginning . . . Be among the first to get a sneak peek of Army of Thieves, the highly anticipated prequel to Zack Snyder's Netflix blockbuster. Producers Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, and Wesley Coller will be joined by director and star Matthias Schweighöfer plus star Nathalie Emmanuel to reveal the heist that started it all. In this action-packed prequel, Dieter, our favorite safecracker, gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe."

Zack Snyder's ARMY OF THE DEAD proved to be a hit for Netflix when it was released back in May and soon we will see how Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer) embarked on a much different adventure in the prequel, Army of Thieves. Coming about two weeks since releasing the first images from the film, Netflix has unveiled the official key art from the upcoming prequel.

Directed by Matthias Schweighöfer, "In this prequel to Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, a small-town bank teller Dieter gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol's most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe." The prequel also stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, Jonathan Cohen, and Noémie Nakai.

In terms of the tonal change, it's important to realize Army of Thieves is telling a completely different story, in which zombies are merely a peripheral element. Army of the Dead blended zombie horror with classic heist capers. Army of Thieves retains the heist theme but swerves the undead altogether. In the absence of horror, the prequel dials up the comedy (as you'd expect with Deiter as the sole focus) and introduces a dash of romance - something missing entirely from Army of the Dead... unless you count Zeus and his Queen. This is an unavoidable consequence of the zombie outbreak happening in Vegas and staying in Vegas. Were the infection worldwide (as in The Walking Dead, for example), Army of Thieves would feel much more in sync with Army of the Dead, but since the incident is isolated to one place and time, stories set elsewhere must compensate by delving into other genres.

Army of the Dead successfully made the most of its limited Las Vegas setting, but with Army of Thieves based around the escapades of the team's German safe-opener, there's a natural inclination to go globe-trotting in the spinoff. This is something Schweighöfer has taken full advantage of, with the trailer conjuring comparisons to James Bond in its use of multiple exotic locales.
