Thanks to this week's Comiclink auction, I reached a milestone in my Doctor Solar collection, finally achieving the full run of 1-31 in average CGC 9.4.

Books bought this week:

# 14 (9.6)

# 15 (9.4)

# 22 (9.2)

For the 31 books spanning 1962-1982, that now gives me:

• 1 in 9.8
• 9 in 9.6
• 14 in 9.4
• 4 in 9.2
• 3 in 9.0

While this is good for # 2 on the registry, it's not in the same league as the mostly 9.6+ collection that @namisgr put together -- and then sold -- a few years back.

And it doesn't come close to touching @Rosland's museum-quality # 1 set - which includes merely 3 lowly 9.4s - and all among the pre-1965 first 10 issues.

But I'm proud of it. I've worked on it slowly and steadily since 2013 or so, when upgrades to my Magnus set were becoming fewer and farther between.

Many upgrades yet to be made, but it feels good to have curated a solid Silver Age set in avg. 9.4 without ever feeling like I was breaking the bank.

Agree... congrats, but where are the pics?

I've been sitting on a #1 for a long time... I can't believe he hasn't hit the big screen yet and made these explode. Great set regardless!

Bumping this thread, as I'd love the chance to upgrade my Doctor Solar set to a solid CGC 9.4+.

As far as I know, there isn't one.

Highest-graded is the Pacific Coast CGC 9.6, which has belonged to boardie Rosland since at least 2008.

I believe he bought the entire Pacific Coast run of the title when it came to market - and steadily upgraded from there.

Likewise, there's just a single CGC 9.6 copy of Magnus # 1.

The Pacific Coast copy is still at the top of the CGC census as the lone #1 in 9.6 condition.  It seems likely that for a non-Marvel or DC comic published in 1962, and 22 years out from the advent of CGC grading, that no 9.8 copy exists.  Possibly not another 9.6, either.

IIRC, I picked up your # 5 - and later won your # 4 when it went to auction.

But I regret missing your # 2 for $1,000 and - I think it was your 9.8 # 26 - that went here ridiculously cheaply.

Man I loved that copy of Solar #2.  The Richard Powers cover art is some of the most sensational work from any title or publisher in the Silver Age, and NM copies published by Gold Key in '62 are very tough, indeed.

I got the initial group from Captain Tripps back in 2008 and have been trying to improve the set ever since...

For those unaware, that's just 3 books out of 31 in less than CGC 9.6 - and a full 1/3 of the run in CGC 9.8.
