What am I missing here? These are reprints right?

Marvelman (L. Miller), Vol. 1, No. 25, and 9 other issues; Young Marvelman (L. Miller), Vol. 1, No. 36 (April 1954), and 12 other later issues.

Estimate
£35 - £55

Buyer's premium: 26.4% (inc. VAT)

And the hammer price - £2,500! So someone paid a total of £3,160 or $4,462

Unbelievable! If I had not just seen it with my own two eyes I would not believe it. Auction estimate of £35 to £55 even seems too high for them. Crazy world.

The Beano, No. 442 (January 6th 1951), and 51 other issues from the same year.

£1,400+

Shocking. To me these are worthless.

why would something from 1951 be worthless? do brits hoard these in huge quantities?

beanos from 1951 seem to sell for $10-$40 on ebay, not oncluding shipping

The lot includes #25, the first Marvelman in the title which is exceptionally rare, as are most early issues.

Here's a £525 eBay sale for a poor #26 alone:

And here are some details regarding the scarcity of that issue:

If that issue is hiding in the lot - difficult to tell from the photo - then someone may have actually got a bargain.

They're not reprints.  The first 24 issues consisted of Captain Marvel and Caprian Marvel Jr reprints, which were halted by DC's lawsuit against Fawcett. #25 up contained new stories.

It's in there, and Marvelman 25 is an extremely difficult to find grail of grails for us Miracleman fans.

Indeed. The hammer price doesn't surprise me at all - an auction format with a group thinking it may be their only ever chance....

As my old man would say - we learn something new every day.

I picked up a pack of 30 or so 1950 “Australian” prints of funny books (Casper, Baby Huey etc) on Gumtree for $40. Sold them all individually between $10 and $50.

OP, I figure that you (read: a person) can’t really judge what things sell for in this hobby. You don’t know the keys of unfamiliar titles and there’s no putting a price tag on what any individual book might mean to a collector. We crazy. 🤪
