PGM ASM 20 - Trimmed or miscut? THE GRADE IS IN!
2 2

I am not sure what I'm dealing with here. I was excited that this book was sold at the grade it was listed as but now that it's in hand I wonder if it has been trimmed or altered. Would I be looking at a green label if I got this bad boy graded?

Now the controversy... tell it to me straight here, gents...

As you can see the pages are absolutely even and the panels run all the way to the cut line on some of these pages. We see the same thing on the opposite page in some, but not all, locations.

I've got a fair number of silver age books but I can't recall one where the panels ran into the cut line like this. The pages do look very even but I have other issues like that. Maybe that has more to do with this one having a nice spine? Supposedly from a single-owner collection, bought by the seller himself as a kid off of a newsstand(!!!). Thoughts? Has this issue been trimmed? Would it be destined for a dreaded green label? Should I just return the damn thing? And of course what grade would you give it? I'm lost, crew

Doubt it was OO off the shelf with the .15 cent sticker. Did you measure or put it on top of another book? Looks to me like the top is a lot narrower than the bottom.....

Good idea. I don't even know how to check for this type of stuff. I just measured now and the bottom edge is 6 and 7/8ths of an inch while to top edge is 6 and 6/8ths of an inch. However there does seem to be a little spine roll up top so when I also measure the bit of the back cover that isn't flush it matches up 6 and 7/8ths of an inch. Not sure if that makes sense.

I just put my copy of ASM 26 on top of it and it lines up pretty well. The edges of the pages on the ASM 26 are rougher but it's a lower grade copy...

If some pictures might help

I dont think it's been trimmed, its most likely a printing error. The only issues I see are what looks like creasing and foxing on the bc corners. I give it an 8.0.

If it was trimmed, it was done cleanly.  I’m thinking production issue, but then I haven’t seen anything that ‘extreme’.  7.5

I agree that it was most likely miscut by the printer. Found this pic of ASM 23 (not my book) Miscut along the top.
Could be safe to say that your book has a production issue and is not trimmed.

Grade IMO: 6.5 as is.

What looks like staple pulls and a small piece out on the spine below the bottom staple.
Some corner blunting.
Writing on the first O in SCORPION on the first page.
Foxing on the back cover, small indents and crease and what looks like a a puncture
and / or a tear near the edge.

Not sure that price sticker is a problem as I've read somewhere that this was
sometimes done by store owners when there was a price increase and they still had
back stock, but the price didn't go up to 15¢ until ASM 75, so not sure that's true for
this book.

Don't know if the CGC graders would ding the sticker as a flaw, most likely unless it does have
some historical signifigance. Could be removed if needed. Someone on here
have info on these price stickers or experience having a book graded with one?

I spoke with the seller again. He said he has owned the book for at least 50 years and says he has never altered it. Between that and what you fine folks have shared my anxiety has been eased. I just dropped this off at my presser. He thinks he'll be able to remove the sticker.

The seller sold this as a 4.0... I think this grades out much higher like most of you seem to. Must be a tough grader! In any case this is being sent in for grading after a C&P. I'll eventually update this thread with the grade... eventually...

THE GRADE IS IN!

I'm a tiny bit disappointed, I won't lie. I didn't know that these old stickers could leave a grease stain like that but once I saw it before it went to CGC it was a big d'oh moment. Should've known. If I knew it'd get a blue label 6.0 with the sticker I would've left it on there as I did find it charming but oh well.

I was all-in for well under half of what this goes for in 6.0 so really can't be too mad, this is still definitely the nicest of my ASM issues under 30 :whee:

Don't have the grader notes but these look like the biggest problem spots to me
