The Great Collectibles Bubble: Waiting To Pop?

I welcome this bubble never a greater selling opportunity in our lifetimes

A few years ago Walking Dead and Saga spurred a whole wave of speculation on Image books and some of the other smaller publisher's books, less so with Marvel and DC. It was a great 6 months of running from shop to shop grabbing stuff and re-selling. If I had timed Saga right I could have turned $90 into $3000 as I bought about 30 copies, but sold too early before they hit $100... actually, I probably could have bought 100 Saga 1s... it did not sell out at all at my local shops. I paid for a family trip to Europe selling these books. I think everything Deadpool picked up then too, so there was money to be made on practically every Deadpool book out there. Yes, it wasn't a deep explosion, but folks here were making the same comments.

One episode into The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, this key issue continues to post impressive gains. Collecting comics is no longer a microcosm
New collectors may not be typical in the sense that they are dollar bin diving or picking up New Comic Book Day issues. Instead, they are focused on one or a few characters as opposed to building a vast collection
As collectors, we have a tendency to view the conversations happening on social media platforms as the entire potential market without taking into consideration that upcoming movies and TV shows on Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix and Amazon have yet to resonate with far bigger audiences which is what we saw with WandaVision and are now witnessing with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
And yes, Captain America #6, the first appearance of the Winter Soldier was a contender to make the Hot 10 after tripling in value this past week

Remarkable!

Here, we have actual evidence of movies and tv driving the pricing of comic books. I was once rudely told I was FOS when I postulated movies and tv has driven the discovery of characters to newcomers and also driven the "values" up on X-Men and related titles. Of COURSE they have. And we even saw the reverse when right before "Wonder Woman: 1984" was released in theaters, All Star Comics #8 saw a dramatic increase in "Value", sudden overall availability and sales figures. When the movie came out and bombed, the "value" settled back down to where it was before. Giving or taking a few thousand dollars.

So, this may be part of the boom we have seen as comic book characters have entered into the multi media arena like never before.

Agreed.  Just look at the list (and this has been the case week after week) all Marvel.  With the exception of a 1st Harley bump here and there.  Marvel movies and TV are popular, and it translates into sales.  Snyder Cut has good reviews, but I have not seen a JLA bump because of it.

surprised X-men 94 actually showed up on a list.  It's been surging upwards the past few weeks but pretty much ignored on many lists... probably a good thing for people trying to pick up a copy.

A 9.0 just sold for $3400 yesterday.  @Bird  Usually only hot moderns variants seem to be talked about on websites like comicbookinvest

I think it’s weird that people like yourself aren’t even phased by something as abnormal as the recent growth we’ve experienced.

I also think it’s weird to behave as if everyone should have somehow been expecting such growth to occur in such a short amount of time.

That’s really weird, especially since the market pretty much lacks any kind of significant history that resembles what we’re witnessing today.  At least not to this extent. Not to my knowledge, anyways.

And as I’ve already explained to others on here, it’s not fear that drives my thought process regarding the current market. It’s caution.

Literally on a plane ride back from Chicago years ago (5-6 years), Hulk 1's doubled in value that I brought back to a friend of mine.  Paid 5K at WW Chicago and then when I landed home it was worth 10K.  People said the same thing back then.  There is nothing wrong with being cautious, but I again I am not sure what you are worried about.  Do you own multiple copies?  If you dont own any copies why do you care?   Right now I have 10 copies varying from 7.0 to 9.8, and I am long on this book so I am not even considering selling in the next 10 years.  Even if the market calms down from their record highs the values will still be higher than their Pre-Covid levels.  How is that a bad thing?

Not a bad thing if one has the money to throw at books that suddenly double in value during a plane trip. For the day to day collector who takes a chance and buys a well populated book that has x3 in value suddenly, it's a risk. People like us don't mind the X3. We mind the -x3 if and when it happens. I watched a woman collect Beanie Babies for years. Had TONS of them. Sometimes paying $6k for one Beanie. The bubble popped. People turned their attention suddenly to Pokemon or whatever was the newest trender. Beanies became virtually worthless. She spent and lost a fortune. She seemed sad about it when we spoke of it. I encouraged her by saying: "Yes. But you love the Beanies still, right?"

"Oh yes." You could see it in her face.

That won't happen to comic books the way it did with Cabbage Patches and Beanie Babies. But still. Average collectors who save their lunch money and buy a book really high, then see it devalue by 50-60%, that's a hit. They know the sales figures were driven by people who don't really love the things and forced values of the things THEY love over their heads and make them unattainable. So, sure. It's a fear thing. And a cautious thing. We have history to look back on as our guide. And I am forever being told not to buy high. So I make sure I am not baked when I buy. LOL!

Today's high could go even higher next day, next, month, or next year, or the opposite.  Nothing is obviously a guarantee, but with the long history of market information we currently have I think comic books aren't tanking in my lifetime.

These aren't beanie babies, and Pokemon cards are not a fad.  Even though I dont care for them many do from that generation.  Every generation has their own set of what they deem as valuable collectibles.  Personally I think most Golden age books are terrible outside of Batman, but yet many people would personally disagree with me on that.  I think most people have a tough time realizing they are being ignorant to what every generation of kids enjoy.  So many older vintage dealers still view in their minds DD #1 and FF #48 are $1.00 books cause they remember seeing long boxes of each book.  I remember buying Batman Adventures 12 at the comic book store I was working at the day it came out.  So to me that book is always a cheap book, but thats not what GPA says lol

I live by these 2 rationals.

If the stock market crashes and stays at zero as well as AF 15's then does anything really matter any more? Your normal day to day life will be forever changed (Yes more so on a complete stock market crash to zero but you get my point).

Enjoy the ride, sell books and keep what you like.  Then call it a life.

Its all cyclical. And its always the same: when markets go up like there is no tomorrow we think it will go on this way forever. Until it stops. And the sky falls. It happened before. It will happen again. People in 1929 thought this was the new normal. Getting rich with borrowing money and buying stocks. However they were wrong.  Now its the time for the suckers to enter the markets and for the players to prepare to get out.

I see what you say saying, but if you are a true long investor you are okay with the ups and downs of the market.  If my stock portfolio dropped by 50% tomorrow across the board I will sell my entire personal comic collection to rebuy more stocks.  If you would have invested 10K into a diversified stock portfolio the year I was born (1980) into the stock market it would be worth $600K today and that accounts for all the market crashes and including the covid March crash btw as of 4/1/2020 which that model was ended on.  So unless society crumbles you should be fine, and again if it does crumble the least of your worries will be your stock portfolio I can assure you.

I will just end our conversation with this.

Enjoy the ride, sell books to take profit where you can and keep what you like.  Then call it a life.

I’ll always prefer to see slow, gradual inflation as opposed to these feeding frenzies we’re witnessing lately.

You bring up Hulk 1, and while I never had a problem with individual books exploding in value here and there, I do sense that something is very different about the current market as a whole,  for better or for worse.

And I’d honestly prefer this market to be saturated with people who actually care about these books, as opposed to sheer speculators, as It only adds to  instability, unpredictability, and false demand.

What kind of activity occurs right before every crash? Activity we’re seeing right now: record high prices occurring in record speeds, as well as the mindset that prices are too high to fail, and people would never allow such a thing to occur, not in their lifetime.

It’s the same story every time.

And while it may seem like I’m saying we should be anticipating a crash, I’m really not (I honestly have no clue where we’re going from here).

But it is what’s preventing me from putting too much faith in the current market. 2c

And its Friday so CBSI it out with its list of things that went crazy this week:

1 Daredevil (1999) #9
Remember a couple weeks ago when this hit the list?  It had jumped to $100 raw at that point.  Now it is double that and 9.8’s are now $800?!?!  Think of what this would be if #10 was the cover on this #9?

2 Captain America (2019) #7 2nd Print
Zero sales and then all of a sudden this is a $100-175 book?  Jthoms posted an article right here on CBSI and it seems that some are jumping all over this one.  That is a kind of ridiculous price bump though, right?

3 Truth: Red, Black & White #1
Ummm…that 2 minutes of screen time was so incredibly tense.  Please don’t let that be the extent of what they do with this character.  It has doubled from last week to $80+.

4 Machine Man #7
Jumping from $5 or less up to $35-50 because of an ad about Power Broker, super serum, yadda, yadda, yadda.  If you are chasing this 1st appearance of Curtis Jackson, why wouldn’t you go for the 1st Power Broker in The Thing #35 first?

5 Marvel #6 Lee Bermejo 1:25 Variant
Up to $130-150 this week after it was selling for $75-100 last week.  Great Terminator 2 looking cover.

6 Tokyo Ghost #1
Less than cover up to $30+ this week after Legendary Pictures picked this one up for a movie.

7 NYX #3
I have been telling everyone to buy this book for like 2 years (and I am the dummy that didn’t follow his own advice).  9.8’s are now selling at $1500 after being a $900-1000 book for the better part of 3 years.  The $2000 9.8 key standard is just over the horizon now.

8 Captain America #312
Prior to the 1st episode of Falcon/Winter Soldier, this was appx. a $20 book.  Expect to pay upwards of $100 for a higher grade copy with a graded 9.6 going for $325.  I think the character is great on the show, but does the fact that it is ‘Karli’ in the MCU and not ‘Karl’ mean this book has no significance?

9 Thor #617
Several outlets are reporting that Kid Loki is coming to the MCU (thanks to Phil Lee for the info).  As such, this book jumped in price from $20-25 to $50+.  While not on the cover, don’t forget about the Tron variant for this issue.

10 Cold Dead War #1
Selling for $15 after release.  Written by George Romero’s son, George C., I like this concept of Zombies from the past.  Has anyone read this one yet?

Honorable Mention:

Betty #46
Thanks to Steve Horn for the heads up on this one.  Jumped from $10 to $150+.  Why?  Some Simpsons level Nostradomus predictions inside.  Pretty cool if you ask me. (online high school in 2021)

Chilling Tales #15
OSPG lists a 6.5 at about $350.  A graded 6.5 sold this week for $9000.  Very few prior sales but the closest in grade was a 7.0 that sold 10 years ago for $160.  This definitely qualifies as one of those ‘Whoa’ Golden Age covers.

Well done.

We mistakenly opined for more validity from people who thought comics were kid stuff. Welcomed them to check it out. So we could feel validated ourselves. It was the same with the Grateful Dead. It was a great scene up until 1987-1988 when "Touch Of Grey" was released. That opened the door to frat boys and what we called "Touch Heads". They brought in dangerous drugs, "instability, unpredictability" and a self entitled "party time!" attitude we soon learned to despise. Gate crashing jerks. Just by saying "Come check it out! Don't know what you are missing!" It went from being a mostly under control house party to having that guy who is a new friend getting too hammered, making a pain out of himself and falling down on all your guitars and breaking your furniture. Then calling you out when he was asked to knock it off and get ahold of themselves.

It's one thing when it's just one person. It's an entirely different matter when it's ten-fifteen THOUSAND of those creeps ruining your good thing.

There are no Hulk 1 CGC 9.8s on the census.  The highest is a 9.4.  Hulk 1 is a great book to own and i do have a low grade copy that I plan on holding for the long term.

So many great books that can be had for next to nothing. So much consternation about the rising price of a select few.

Not planning on selling?  What does it matter how high the price goes.

Afraid of being priced out?  Spend your money on some books that have some room to grow.

I can't bring myself to complain that I missed the boat on some books that are older than me.

I'm smack in the middle of this market churn right now as a collector -- I have about 2/3 of a complete SA key collection (only Marvel), and while a lot of the books I own are spiking (IH 1, XM 4, AF 15, FF 1), a lot of the ones I don't own are tripling in perceived value as well (some of these I may never afford now without selling another big key)

I've handled the churn as best I can -- I've sold three books and bought two others: books that don't seem to be 'as' on fire right now.  I figure they may catch up eventually and I'll have spent my money wisely.

Will it work?  Who knows!  But as others have posted, I'm having fun wheeling and dealing in the current market and trying to stay one surfboard ahead of the tsunami.

I've said it before....

People complain that movies are driving prices, and then when movies aren't the reason driving prices up, it's the same complaints....
