(show recently purchased) Silver Age Comics that are cooling down (or cold)
2 2

Edit:  I edited this thread.  People are reluctant to list cold books because they are chasing them.  So instead, why don't you show the "cold" book you recently bought?

So I keep reading the forum for Silver Age comics that are heating up, and using it to figure out what NOT to buy.  Unless the "heat" is extremely recent, in which case I sometimes buy things because of FOMO if it's a book on my long want list anyway.

Remember Journey into Mystery #118?  First Destroyer?  Today it seems to have ONLY a 20% to 50% premium over every JIM from its era right now, even though it's the first appearance of a movie "villian" (machine?).  I want to be careful not to buy a comic now, only to have it go all JIM 118 on me, slowly leaking like the tire on my wife's SUV (yeah, I gotta get that fixed).

So what are the "cold" or "cooling" books?  (I'm talking more about out of favor books here).  Maybe unspoiled by the cinematic universe, or they had their turn on the Marvel/DC CMU merry go 'round and the ride has stopped.  I know there has been a lot of talk about DC keys being cheap, and I believe that's accurate.

(Not my picture, but it's available for sale at a fair price at a popular auction site)

I'm not sure about the Batman SA Villain keys. I looked at the data for Batman #189, the first appearance of the SA Scarecrow. Sorry, @piper, but when somebody makes a claim, I have to check it out for myself.

Please note - I can't do every grade, because some grades don't get sold all that often.

CGC 9.4: High in 2020 - $490, Most recent sale - $2,200 in February, 2021.
CGC 9.0: High in 2020 - $1,140, Most recent sale - $1,400 in January, 2021.
CGC 8.5: High in 2020 - $589, Most recent sale - $950 in February, 2021.
CGC 8.0: High in 2020 - $699, Most recent sale - $750 in March, 2021.
CGC 7.5: High in 2020 - $515, Most recent sale - $660 in February, 2021.
CGC 7.0: High in 2020 - $490, Most recent sale - $609 in March, 2021.
CGC 6.5: High in 2020 - $375, Most recent sale - $575 in March, 2021.
CGC 6.0: High in 2020 - $342, Most recent sale - $452 in March, 2021.
CGC 5.5: High in 2020 - $325, Most recent sale - $430 in February, 2021.
CGC 5.0: High in 2020 - $440, Most recent sale - $340 in March, 2021.
CGC 4.5: High in 2020 - $210, Most recent sale - $399 in March, 2021.
CGC 4.0: High in 2020 - $210, Most recent sale - $300 in March, 2021.
CGC 3.5: High in 2020 - $165, Most recent sale - $250 in March, 2021.
CGC 3.0: High in 2020 - $200, Most recent sale - $175 in February, 2021.
CGC 2.5: High in 2020 - $138, Most recent sale - $195 in March, 2021.

So, except for CGC 3.0 and CGC 5.0, all grades of the book that have had a sale in 2021 have increased, some by a significant amount. I believe a more accurate statement would be that the rate of Batman SA Villain keys is not increasing anywhere near the rate of SA Marvel keys.

Everyone, I would have liked to have done another book, like Batman #171, but I just didn't have time. I have to prepare for my Fantasy Baseball auction, which will be held tonight.

Fair point.  I would say they look like a bargain relatively speaking.

Also add Adventure Action 242 and 252.

I've been scratching my head to think of some Marvel SA Books that are cold and am frankly struggling to come up with any.  Perhaps books like Conan 1, Secret Wars 1& 8... but these are bronze age books.

How's Avengers doing? anyone notice decreasing demand/price after Endgame?

I think prices are up a little with the exception of Avengers 8 which had a huge recent jump.

Piper, did you mean to reference Action 242 and 252?

Any early captain mar-vel stuff. The movie boosted a lot of it up, books like captain marvel 18 and marvel superheroes 12. But once the movie came out and was generally received as just okay, these books are back to affordable (if there are any crazy fans out there like me for that era of Mar-Vell)

Off the top of my head...

Showcase 22

BB 28

Batman Villain SA Keys

SC22 has been going up in all grades that have had recent sales with few exceptions, and BB28 has generally been up recently but less consistently.    Don't trust the top of your head!  :nyah:

Avengers #1 has been up in all grades since the fall, obscenely so in some grades of late.   Was a bit stagnant, even down a bit after Endgame, but not the past few months in all grades per GPA.

It's hard to think of any SA Marvel books that are cooling down.  Any book that's only experiencing moderate growth feels cold... Like Avengers 1 and 4. I thought they were cold, buy looked up some sold prices to see they were selling for a good bit more than when I was looking at them last summer.

How are TOS39, 40 and 41? I'm hearing very little buzz about them recently, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are cooling?

Surprised on selling prices of Batman 189, think I may be sending in some under copies of it and 227 to CGC now.

Usually any book I have multiple copies of are cold when I finally decide to sell one.
