A fairly obscure failed tv pilot from 1973 that remains a vivid memory to me watching it as a child due to the comic book connection. Great to hear a number of the titles mentioned even the underground Zap! Pretty sure this movie and Steranko’s History of Comics got me interested in GA Captain America as a kid.

Jarrett was a failed 1973 pilot film starring Glenn Ford as an investigator who specializes in art-related crimes. The eccentric, over-the-top bad guy played by Anthony Quayle is also a comic book collector! He keeps his collection in a special room he calls his "funatorium."

Although most of the posters seen are contemporary DC covers, Jarret asks the collector if he has CAPTAIN AMERICA # 1. He, in fact, professes to have everything from UNCLE SCROOGE, HAPPY HOOLIGAN and KRAZY KAT (the latter being mainly comic strips, not books) right up to and including "the latest undergrounds such as ZAP and THE FABULOUS FURRY FREAK BROTHERS."

 

 

He even has a pile of duplicates which he routinely runs through a shredder in order to enhance the value of his collectible copies!

Towards the end of the picture, this whole marvelous room is destroyed in a climactic fight scene.

In another sorta-kinda comic book connection, Yvonne (Batgirl) Craig appears/In fact, she appears semi-nude wrapped in a giant snake, representing Eve in the Garden of Eden with the Serpent!

The movie was “lost” to me until a few years ago. I could only remember the comics and Captain America mention but little else. Probably saw it on or close to original run in 1973 and even a few years later in the mid 70’s I didn’t remember the title. So after decades I finally found the title a few years ago after many different searches online. Besides comics I’m a massive film buff/collector. Movie is only so, so but a great cast and the comics piece makes it for me...

I actually watched it last night and thought it was pretty cool for the time it came out. Interesting that they quickly chose to set up an arch enemy in the pilot episode. Loved how the villain says “..right down to the Fabulous Furry Freak Bros.”. Funny to see Forrest Tucker as a preacher too! Thanks for posting!

Really? Where? I got it on a bootleg dvd. Never saw it show up on tv since the 1970’s.

Maybe Kino will pick it up one day for blu-ray...
