How long until you Marvel guys come to the DC Darkside because you can't afford to collect your own publisher's books?

I watched Very Gary's latest episode on YouTube late last night and he showed that Madame Xanadu's first appearance from 1977 tripled in price recently- it was (I believe) $377 in 9.8 a year ago and now it's $1000 (!!)... I find this completely flabbergasting and the very definition of "speculation" since apparently it's tied in to J.J. Abrams announcing a Justice League Dark series for HBO Max.

That's not that serious for a key issue of a character who will be part of Justice League Dark. And honestly, the 9.8s are expensive because there aren't a ton available, that book will come down. On the other hand Swamp Thing 37 STILL is undervalued as 9.8's are relatively tough and the character has a long and proven track record.

I think Batman 251 is an extremely important issue, even if not a "key". While nowhere near Joker's first appearance, it may as well be, as the version of the character it presents differs so wildly from any version presented in the preceding decades, and establishes the core traits of arguably the most recognized comic villain of the next 50 years. There are 2,750 copies of 251 in the census, and the last 9.6 sold on eBay went for a little less than $5k at the end of March 2021. A similar 9.6 sold for $3.5k in 2018 - a relatively modest increase factoring in the recent price craziness. Batman 232 is the first appearance of a popular villain, there are 2,800 in the registry, and a 9.8 sold this month for $6.25k - 9.8s were going for over $5k at the beginning of 2019. I'm not saying that DC is immune to the current market climate, but it sure seems more resistant than Marvel, and even important DC books seem a lot more accessible to average collectors.

Batman 251 has exploded. 9.6 copies used to sell regularly for under $1K, and 9.0 copies as little as $150 bucks. While it was the beginning of the "new joker" and the story is fantastic, it is nowhere near Detective 168 and never will be.  232 is a MAJOR villain and is STILL under valued when compared to Marvel counterparts (think 1st appearance of the Green Goblin), that being said books like Tec 225 have exploded off the map, and add Tec 76 (scarecrow) to the list. Books are just not obtainable any more.

RE Moderns ... Just picked up Sandman Locke and Key 1 (all covers)... $7/ea for those new DCs is no joke!!

Will it make for a lot of $50 books in the future if anything in them gets hot or will it just kill interest in the franchise?

In theory if they are giving more content pages than a $3.99 comic it should not matter, though realistically folks are going to buy half as much. DC is betting that "event" books continue to sell in big numbers.

DC tried this before in the 70s.. twice, trying to push higher cover prices via more pages, and it didn't work either time.

Folks are willing to pay the $ for a giant size, but not for every issue in a title spread out over several titles. People have a limit to what they will spend on what is generally, 95% of the time, a rapidly depreciating asset (and obviously a chunk of folks don't view them as an asset at all, the read them, toss them in a box, whatever)

Have they deluded themselves into thinking they can do this for every book just because people bought a ton of the joker series at $6.99? (and anyone doing so thinking the books might get hot got burned... these event books rarely do...right away at least

They are managing to cut their sales at a time when comics are hot.

This thread title would have been much better as "come to the DC Darkseid" ;)

I posted this same thought 20 hours ago, page 2.

Read the thread n00b! :sumo:

Instead of buying 30-year-old key issues from DC Comics in the 1960s (when they should have been buying them cheap), people were spending all their money on new Marvel books.

Instead of buying 30-year-old key issues from Marvel Comics in the 1990s (when they should have been buying them cheap), people were spending all their money on new Valiant books.

Instead of buying 30-year-old key issues from Valiant Comics in the 2020s (when they should have been buying them cheap), people were spending all their money on DC Comics from the 1930s and Marvel Comics from the 1960s at all-time high prices.

I wonder what the future could possible be? :kidaround:

If anyone needs me, I'll be over here:whistle:

I was trying to decide about looking for a copy of FF 49, I've had a few over the years, maybe more than a few, and they have gone up...and then  I saw this on Clink. FF49 has 3833 copies on the census and Adventure 210, has 151. FF 49 is from 1966, Adventure 210 is from 1955. Maybe he won't be in endgame, but I always thought the kid and his dog story was sweet.

Now it's very possible that there will be a new great FF movie (the first ones were not my favorite although I like the series...and then I thought...who doesn't like dogs? and super dogs...even though it would be hard to have a Krypto movie...151 against 3833...

So I upgraded my copy.

I looked at that book myself earlier today. Had I not just grabbed some books myself recently, I would have been bidding you up! Awesome pick-up!

I was thinking of this thread today as I was looking at some DC books and yeah, no. DC keys are crazy expensive too, since they have that added scarcity of key characters being introduced in the Golden Age.

First Penguin? fogetaboudit.

First Two Face? fogetaboudit.

Second Two Face? lol, you mad bro?

First Giganta, that can't be too bad, right? NOPE!

Ok, so let's get out of the golden age, let's get something more recent, how about first Shiva, can't be a 1000$ book right?

Yeesh, what about Peacemaker, has the Cena hype reached him yet?

So yeah, I reckon there are a few good DC books out there still...

Power Girl, Black Lightning and John Constantine stand out as under-priced, but the most under-priced for mine is Batman #357 - Killer Croc is due to explode.
