Is this really a 9.8?

I recently sold a Aliens 1 cgc 9.6 and was told once the buyer had it in hand that I slipped the book out the side (was in a older case) and placed a 9.2 book in its place. They screamed fraud at me and opened a return without contacting me first.

Was the first time that's happened to me and I don't ever want that stress again

Here is a similar 9.6 up for sale right now, in a new case

So, you tell me what a 9.6 is

When this starts happening regularly, it helps us refocus. We look at the BOOK and not the label. I don't care what the label says. If it says 9.8 and I look at the book and say "No way. Never." Then I pass on buying the book. It isn't good for the seller who is probably aware it ISN'T a 9.8, but he/she is stuck with it at least at that moment. Not me. Or you.

CGC is filled with people who have differing judgment calls. Just like us. It really gets back to the very first arguments AGAINST professional grading. Who is someone else to tell me this book is a certain grade?" The most value is gotten from a restoration screen. That should be easy enough. Afterward, it's sort of an "eye of the beholder" thing.
Am I supposed to be psyched when I send an obvious 8.0 and get a 9.8? Cha-Ching? I don't think so. I give a buyer more credit than to tell them "Wall, itza 9.8 and priced accordingly." That doesn't fly.

Sometimes a pressing will help hide spine tics from the human eye and make the book look like a pristine 9.8.

But then when the comic gets squeezed into that inner well during encapsulation, the pressure can cause those spine tics to reappear and become much more noticeable. The way a book is handled during encapsulation could possibly even cause non-color breaking spine tics to turn into color-breaking spine tics.

Not saying that's what happened here, but I've seen examples of it from my own experiences.

I'm new here but let me see if I'm getting the hang of this...

CGC says it's a 9.8 so it's a 9.8.

It's a CGC 9.8 ;)

Whether it's an actual 9.8 is up to you (and more importantly, the person buying the book from you when you want to sell it)

Been for a 9.8 ASM 210. I was thinking of bidding on this auction, but looking at the scans.  I see at least 3-4 very large spine creases as well a dirty back cover.    How did this get a 9.8?  😕🤷‍♂️

Shouldn't make it through a 9.8 prescreen...

I have had books come back over graded and they are hard to sell for the stated grade. I have had a return on a 9.8 certified book with a faint stress mark. I had to drop the price  $50 to make the sale to another buyer.  I better knock on wood because there is still time to return it.....again!

But it sucks when they come back under graded. A rare 8.0 book with stress marks that don't exist should have been an easy 9.4...

Then you have the multiple 9.0's that are clearly 9.8. No grader notes so I have no clue what the flaws are....the books look immaculate and I check them too. I am not a professional grader, but I have been high percentage of accuracy. So if I deem a book to be a 9.4 and it comes back 8.0, someone is lying and it ain't me.

9.8's are the easiest to grade due to the lack or flaws.

Got to take the good with the bad... and still will continue to use CGC.

Curious...

Spine crease location(s) is the same here https://certifiedcomic.shop/graded-comics/amazing-spider-man-210-cgc-9-4/ as it is here https://www.ebay.com/itm/164838761766?hash=item266127e526:g:bB0AAOSwSLtgidb3

Am I imagining things?

Is that just part of the artwork on the cover?

Look right above the "Hey Spidey" on the eBay book - that crease isn't on the other book you linked to.
