There is a group of guys here who have done some good deeds; among them was teaching me, thru this thread, everything I know about DCs Big Five.

More to the point, and most importantly, these gentlemen spent a great deal of time and money making sure the creators of these great comics were properly thanked, and were made aware of how much their work meant to us.

Far too many of the artists, writers, editors, colorists, inkers, even letterers of our hobby have passed without that.

Russ Heath knew, thanks to you guys.

One of my favorite artists of all time...right up there with the rest of the legends. May he rest in peace...

Sorry I haven't weighed in for awhile fellers. I learned of Heath's passing last week and because of the crunch of the school year starting, just didn't have time to respond on the boards.

I'm grateful for all the support of folks right on these boards who attended the Big-5 banquets and even sent $$ in absentia to help underwrite the expenses of Russ and the old guys. Russ was always good for a laugh. Never a moment went by when he wasn't dropping a one-liner that elicited an "oooh" or "ugghhh" from all the guys. He was a good sport with his fans and signed stuff over and over into infinity and beyond. I wish he would've been a bit less rigid with the sketches at shows. There were ALWAYS people who would line up to get a sketch from him, but he was such a perfectionist that he preferred doing all the work at home with no gawkers about. I swear, if he just went with it, he'd have made a second career of just convention sketches.  Alas, I can name only 3 instances EVER where he broke down and drew a sketch for somebody at a show. He was still drawing at home pretty much right up til the end and the stuff he put together was truly stunning.  He came to more war comics banquets than ANY other pro over the years. I think he was just happy that his stuff had an impact on people. It definitely did on me.
My best to his family at this time. I've been reflecting on the incredible work of this man. What an amazing legacy of staggering art that maintained its quality throughout his whole long career. Glad I had a chance to meet and hang out with this legend. Couple of the good'ns.

Shameless sales plug! 

Im running a Silver Age war sale starting later this morning. Some early Rock oaaw books, a few wash tones, a few Atlas war books and a few nice EC Two Fisted Tales books.

Havent done this in a while! Curious to see how things go...
