Question about pencil marks on comics?

5 posts in this topic

We have all seen the heritage comics that have been bought, then sold after removal of the pencil mark with a higher CGC grade. Does a pencil mark make that much difference? And what is the safest way to remove it?? I would have though that a conventional 'rubber' would do more damage than good?

Pencil marks alone doesn't do much difference. It's affect on grade is minimal (in GA comics)

Comics with pencil marks are graded up to Mint 9.9 so I guess it's less than 0.1 difference, if they are unobtrusive. CGC 9.9 thrilling comics

Those resubmitted copies had been pressed (+maybe cleaned), that's why they got better grades.

IMHO those pencil marks were erasured only for aesthetic reasons (and possibly to hide resubmitting), not for getting better grades.

According to CGC, normal arrival marks do not change their grading. almost half of the Mile Highs had arrival dates. Those books are some of the finest golden age around. CGC is looking for arrival marks to help authenicate that the book is a pedigree.

If they deducted for them, they would have to downgrade the Edgar Church collection. That's not going to happen. The White Mountains had arrival marks, as did the Rockfords, the Larson, and the Frsco copies. All nice collections. The marks make those books.

Unobtrusive date stamps and distributer markings are common place on books from the 1940 to 1960s.

The biggest problem is with collectors that do not want marks on their copies. Those of us who collect high grade golden age will be happy to buy all the pencil marked copies.

As Arty pointed out the 9.9 Thrilling is a Mile High. CGC did NOT deduct for the marks. They have graded very few goldenage books 10.0.

Don't erase them, that will lower the grade for sure.
