I see a tick along the spine on Spidey's foot.  They probably ignored the upper left corner as a manufacturing issue.  The book looks like it's been pressed, but I suppose that's obvious anyway.

What else do you see?

I think the tick along the spine on Spidey's foot is the bottom staple.

The right edge, where the pages are visible--maybe that doesn't get factored in, but it's something that would bother me at this high of a price point; I'm not accustomed to seeing it on books graded this highly. Who knows--maybe my 9.8 standards are way too high.

Funny you say that, because I see visible interior pages all the time on 9.8s -- I don't believe it's factored in at all by the graders, though I agree with you that it affects the overall eye appeal.  I'm not in the Silver Age 9.8 market (!!!) but when I buy modern 9.8s, I will not buy a book that looks like this (or frankly, any 9.8 with less than white pages).  Anyone who wants this particular book in 9.8 is going to have to know that you almost certainly can't have a 9.8 of ASM #3 without pressing, and they'll know they can't be too choosy.

Also I can't say it's true 100% of the time, but generally I assume this effect to be the direct result of pressing.  Others who know more about pressing than I do can probably shed more light on this.

That's very interesting--I don't often look at Silver Age 9.8s either, but take this Hawkman 14 (1966) and this Hawkman #18 (1967). They're a few years later than ASM 3, but I think it's worlds better in terms of eye appeal, and this is what I would consider a 9.8.

I see what you mean, those are beautiful books.  Not sure what to say except that (in my experience) CGC doesn't downgrade for the visible interior pages and that I agree those 9.8s have better eye appeal.

That's good to know--I didn't know that about CGC's standards, b/c it's personally a big flaw for me. So this is clearly a case where I would just get out of the bidding much earlier than someone else, especially if they're just buying the label.

I have finally completed the #1-700 run.  Still dreaming of a 9.0, but 8.0 WP is more than good enough for now.

Great colors , the best characteristic of superb paper quality IMHO

And you can't beat the dealer you bought it from

He sure blows through the high grade ASM'S fast !

Can't argue with you there.  I have bought tons and tons of comics from Bob over the years.  Highly recommended.

ASM 2 is my least favourite cover of the entire Ditko run.  In fact when I originally put the 1-700 run together, this was the last book I purchased.  Of course, I broke up that run and rebuilt 1-50 plus other keys.

Interesting.  It's not a favorite, but I have a hard time imagining the argument in favor of, say, ASM #10 over ASM #2.  IMHO ASM #8 and #38 are weak as well.

I guess I'm just not a fan of the Vulture.  I think I've blocked out the cover to 38.
