I think you answered your own question.  I believe the difference in price is in large part because her arrival was drawn out over multiple issues:

ASM15 - 1st mention of MJ

ASM25 - 1st cameo (face not shown)

ASM38 - 2nd cameo (face not shown)

ASM42 - 3rd cameo on last page (face finally revealed)

ASM43 - 1st full appearance (about time!)

Also 31 isn’t just Gwens first appearance, it’s Harry Osborns as well(thumbsu.  Lastly 31 is also the start of the brilliant 31-33 story arc.

Your last point about Harry Osborn is probably the most important one.  There's no "clean" comparison between Gwen and MJ because one first appeared with another major character and the other, as you point out, has multiple firsts (although for me #42 will always be the one to get because that cameo is among the most memorable single panels in the entire history of Spidey).

If this has been covered in another area I am sorry about that, but I thought this would be the best place to ask for educated opinions:  Why is Gwen Stacy's first  appearance have so much more dollar value than Mary Jane's?  Just a quick look on eBay shows an 8,5 of 31 selling for $1600, while an 8.5 of 43 sold for $449.  I think Mary Jane is the far more important character with many more appearances over more years in the series.  Is it the idea of Gwen's death that drives it up?  I was thinking it might be the murkiness of Mary Jane's first appearance.  There is the cameo in 25, you get the iconic scene at the end of 42, or the first full appearance in 43.  Anyway I was just wanting some other folks opinion on it.  Thanks!

Scarcity drives it a little ... the 42 is twice as common as 31, and 42 in grade is not scarce, so this affects the dynamic. GOD BLESS....

I’m with you; I prefer 42 myself.  But as I’ve done with all great cameo vs first full appearance dilemmas, I collected them both(thumbsu

My most recent pick up, and probably my last ASM silver age buy except for possible raw upgrades.  I don't see myself getting 1-5, or 14.  After that, I am only missing 101, and 129 to have a full run to about 325.

Save up or sell some stuff. 2-5 & 14 are attainable.

Keep hunting.  You never know what is out there unless you look...??  You may come across that unexpected gem.  Maybe not the ASM gem, but something tradeable, or sellable.  Good luck with the hunt and completing your run.

Your ASM 8 and 14 are really nice looking copies.  The ASM 14 has some flaws but i think it is still better than the copy I have.

The drug store where I bought my first superhero comic (Jimmy Olsen 80 Pg. Giant #13) in the summer of 1965 is still in business. It’s not far from where I live so I wander over there once or twice a year.

That's really remarkable! I mean what you have now is mostly big chain stores CVS and others. The mom & pop stores have become a relic. I don't recall any small drug stores myself being from the 80's. There was Navarro drug store which was a local chain store in Miami back then. They're mostly gone now far as I know.

It truly is remarkable that it's still there with the same name; Ebbeling Pharmacy. My aunt and uncle lived just down the street so I went there quite often when we visited.
