well wife went to China for a few weeks so I took the opportunity to clean up my shelving situation...

before...20190223_165110.thumb.jpg.c40147eca338e786993b48c11feb0aa9.jpg

top shelf had a fee short boxes of slabs that I had already moved. I had laid down some cardboard on the wire shelves so they didnt damage the books, but it was definately a sub optimal solution...

went to Ikea, bought the big 5x5 Kallax. I initially though... was this overkill? was it too big of a unit for the space? did i need this much storage?

The outcome (warning shelf porn)

20190225_211834.thumb.jpg.cf1b8c52d34c491cdef595b800da3a90.jpg

looks like the 5x5 was necessary!

i bought one of the shelf splitters (the grey thing, top middle) so I could stack slabs flat, but not make too big of a stack (so there wouldnt be to much weight on bottom slabs). Short box of raws fit fine in the bottom right cube (since the openings are 13x13). Short boxes for slabs didnt (they are about 13.75" tall with lids off. So... I exacto knifed the slab boxes down an inch on the sides and back and took some slabs out so they could sit at an angle in the boxes. That allowed me to slide the slab boxes in for storage. Need to get another box for my overflow slabs. But otherwise I'm set now! Absolutes and my old Rainbow Barks library slipcases fit just fin in the 13x13 spaces, as did the Fear Agent oversized tomes. My Wednesday comics book didnt fit of course... though the Taschan 75 years of DC comics archive fit on its side.

The wife will be pleased! At least until you buy a second shelving unit hehe...

Haha ya!  He's got two weeks to buy an equivalent amount of stuff before she gets back to fill a second shelving unit.  And then when she questions the space, turn the tables on her!  I always had this stuff, when's the last time you were down here??

@miraclemet Very nice! Very clean setup, maximum storage taking up minimal space, and it looks nice! I like the IKEA look too; just remodeled my kitchen in IKEA. :D

@spreads Thank you for the kind words. They have dividing walls between the cabinets, This way I have the weight sub-divided into areas, instead of a sixteen foot long run of weight along one piece of wall.

@tv horror Thanks!

@piper It started life as a three car garage, so I have space to spare. Still some things I have to do; get the art up on the wall, add some floating shelving so I can get some of the larger LEGO sets on display (Death Star 1.0, SSD, ISD 1.0, ISD 2.0, First Order SD, Venerator, etc.), I want to make an "L" off the shelf unit so I can have another large run of Funko Pop's, and find a decent/matching display/curio cabinet so I can put out the 90's Kenner Toys Aliens & Predator toys. I love that set & the DHC mini-comics that came with them! Kinda sad the new NECA line doesn't have a comic series to go with the figures, but that makes the originals more interesting I suppose.

@the blob If my house floods to the point where the comics are threatened/destroyed, hopefully I'd have enough warning to relocate them upstairs (regardless of how much of a pain in the butt that would be), and/or packing up the high dollar issues & sending them FedEx to a family member who can hold on to them during the weather emergency. If the worst does come to pass, we evacuate, and I come home to a crater, I'll have somewhat larger concerns such as, "where am I going to live," "did I make sure to grab all of life's important paperwork," and "how soon does flood insurance pay out so I can re-build the house;" I guarantee "oh , the comics" is going to be way, way down the list. That's not being snarky; I enjoy collecting and finding "the good stuff" as much as anyone else, but I don't have comics of the "well, I'll drop this one off at Heritage & buy a new house after it sells" variety. I'd be more upset about losing one of a kind family photos or heirlooms.

Please explain exactly what this is, who made it, and why those particular images!  There must be a pretty cool story here.

No story really.  These are simply 6 Third Eye postcard reproductions of their famous blacklight posters they did, matted and framed for display

Okay!

This has been in the works for quite some time, and I’m finally done! As none of you are aware, I recently moved, and had to face the daunting ordeal of moving my comic room; ComicLand!

A warning to any of you about to undertake this chore; it takes forever to pack. If you’re anything like me, you will find scads of cool junk you haven’t played with in years, slowing the process to a crawl. But, here’s how I ended up.

Now, before you judge me for my cheap-o shelves, just bear in mind that I’m only asking them to hold 3 short boxes each. Also, these units sit flush on the floor, better distributing the weight.

Really pumped about transitioning to short boxes! So much better!

Tip: If, like me, you live with extreme weather, store comics on an interior wall!

@KirbyJack I was thinking about getting the exact same shelves. Tell me, are there graded books in those boxes? I worry that the shelves won't hold 12 boxes worth of graded books.

My OCD is dying! Why do you have the "MARVEL" and "COMICS" posters over the window out of order so they read "COMICS" "MARVEL"?!?!?

The one on the left is “DC Comics”, the right is “Marvel”.

I’m not overly OCD, but not even I could have lived with a “Comics Marvel” scenario.

99+ % raw. I think CGC boxes would fit (height is not adjustable). If I remember right, the shelves hold 150 lbs each, so as long as your short boxes weigh 50 or less, I think you’d be good.

HAH! Now I see it. Ok personal crisis averted. Thought I was going to have to come over and do some re-arranging!
