I only know some details... but I'd like to know if they're basically out of business or if it's an import matter.

 

Here's an excerpt from a supplier:

For most of this year, our primary brand of supply bags -- Fun Yet

Brand -- have been unavailable in many popular sizes due to problems

with the factory in China. Unfortunately, we do not know when these

out-of-stock bags will be available again. But in the mean time, we

have managed to snag a handful of bags produced by "PKK". These bags

are made to the same specifications as the Fun Yet brand bags -- 60

micron polypropylene plastic -- and are of comparable quality. We

are offering the following PKK Brand supplies at the same price as

the Fun Yet Brand, while supplies last.

Charles' business partner in China skipped out with the six-figure payment for a container load, and disappeared. Best guess is that he had a gambling problem and the money is long gone.

 

Charles is one of the nicest, most honest guys in the comic community, someone I would have trusted with a bag of uncounted money by the second time I met him.

 

The guys from BCW told me at Planet Comicon that they were discussing the possibility of having Charles distribute their product on the west coast. I know Charles would much prefer to be selling his own stuff again, but even if he is solvent enough to absorb a six-figure loss, it's got to be tough to find a new "trustworthy" business partner an ocean away... frown.gif

Thanks for the info. So it looks like the factory CAN manufacture bags, they just don't have the orders since the main US distribution point isn't ordering any more.

 

The exchange rate is almost 8 to 1 from CNY to USD. Six figures can be over 1 million Chinese dollars when converted.

 

(I looked into manufacturing my own bags some years ago since I have relatives in Taiwan/China that own a plastics factory.)

One major caveat. I am leaving for SoCal on Sunday morning and will be gone a week. I'll be in Anaheim for three days, then in San Diego for three more (working the National Psychiatric Convention). My laptop is dead and I don't feel like buying another this week, so I will be without computer on the trip. No replies to PMs, and clearly no product will be shipped. Essentially I will be chockful of worthless for a week (which isn't much different from any other weeks)
