80's Stuff Art Day!

If you collected comics in the 80's, you probably remember this cover:

The limited distribution "test cover" for JUSTICE LEAGUE #3 by Kevin Maguire. The "Superman Comics" logo is pretty spiffy.

Not sure when the GROO piece was done, but that's one creation I'll always associate with the 80's. Enjoy!

I always liked that Justice League cover. My understanding, though, is that they were test marketing the new logo? At least, I believe that was the point behind those two issues. Of course, this makes absolutely no sense when you put variant covers on the books. Those books were hot because they were limited distribution variant covers...not because anyone really cared about the new logo.

 

If that is indeed the story behind those two variants, it makes me wonder who the think tank was that came up with that idea.

I think the test was to see if the Superman logo would help boost sales. I agree that having a different cover sort of muddies the equation. The cover was hot at the time for the variant cover art as well as the new logo, IIRC.
