CGC-certified TMNT #1 and Superman #1 Top ComicConnect Auctions

Posted on 8/29/2023

Four comic books certified by CGC each realized six figures in ComicConnect auctions during the month of August.

Four comics that are graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) each realized six figures in ComicConnect auctions during August 2023. They include two examples of Superman #1, a high-grade Silver Age key signed by Stan Lee and a rarity from the 1980s that brought in some series green.

Taking top honors was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 graded CGC 9.8 that realized $178,538. Published in 1984 by Mirage Studios, this comic features the first appearance of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Master Splinter and the villainous Shredder. The turtles were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird as a parody of modern superhero comics. But after being licensed to Playmates, the tone of the noir story was altered to a more child-friendly concept to sell a line of toys and an animated series in 1987.

Another stand-out comic was a Superman #1 graded CGC 1.5 that realized $152,088. Superman launched an industry when he first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, ushering in a new type of protagonist that harkened back to ancient mythology, and inspiring the creation of countless heroes that dominated the newsstands throughout World War II. DC then decided to give Superman his own title, another first for the burgeoning comic industry. Superman #1 hit the stands in the summer of 1939 and instantly sold out, proving the star power of the superhero.

This was the second example of the iconic Golden Age book sold for six figures by ComicConnect in August. A Superman #1 graded CGC 1.0 realized $126,500 on August 16.

Also sold in the auction on August 23 was a Fantastic Four #48 Signature Series signed by Stan Lee and graded CGC 9.8, which realized $121,670. This comic, published in 1966, features the first appearance of Silver Surfer and the first cameo appearance of Galactus.
