Posted on 6/5/2024
CGC Signature Series is ecstatic to announce an exclusive In-House Private Signing with the incredible John Carpenter and Sandy King! All signature options for this Private Signing Event are limited, so be sure to submit before they are gone! See pricing and details below.
Few filmmakers have had as galvanizing and enduring an impact on cinema as John Carpenter. As director, writer, producer and composer, Carpenter has brought to the screen some of the most popular and influential films in history, beginning with his 1978 breakthrough: a low-budget horror film called Halloween, which shook both moviegoers and the film industry with a force that continues to be felt nearly 50 years later.
Carpenter’s horror films—including The Thing (1982), The Fog (1980), Christine (1983) and In the Mouth of Madness (1994)—have made him into the modern master of the genre, though his flair for action, suspense, mystery and comedy have been on considerable display in a remarkable range of now-classic films. They include the Oscar®-nominated Starman (1984); the hard-driving action of Assault on Precinct 13 (1976); Escape from New York (1981) and Escape from L.A. (1996); horror-hybrids Vampires (1998) and Ghosts of Mars (2001); science-fiction thriller Village of the Damned (1995); and the cult-classic action-comedies Big Trouble in Little China (1986) and They Live (1988).
On television, Carpenter has been equally influential, directing the suspense film Someone’s Watching Me and the Emmy®-winning Elvis, starring Kurt Russell. Carpenter won the Cable ACE Award for writing the HBO Film El Diablo (1990) and also created and co-directed with Tobe Hooper the fan-favorite Showtime anthology film Body Bags. Most recently, Carpenter collaborated with his wife, producer Sandy King to create and produce the Peacock docu-horror series Suburban Screams, for which he directed an episode, returning to the director’s chair for the first time in more than a decade.
Carpenter’s iconic 1978 score for Halloween not only frightened audiences and influenced an entire generation of composers, it also began his career as a composer, which has included Lost Themes, three widely acclaimed albums of non-soundtrack music, as well as two albums called Anthology that include his inimitable film music.
Through Storm King Productions, Carpenter and King have also created Storm King Comics, an acclaimed line of comics and graphic novels that feature horror, science-fiction, adventure and suspense stories for all ages, including the “John Carpenter Presents Storm Kids” imprint.
Returning to his indelible 1978 creation, Carpenter served as executive producer of new Halloween films beginning in 2018. He composed the scores for the films, along with his son, Cody Carpenter, and godson, Daniel Davies.
Carpenter is the recipient of dozens of awards and honors, including the Le Carrosse D’Or (Golden Coach) from the French Directors Guild during the 2019 Cannes Film Festival; lifetime achievement honors from the Bram Stoker Awards, the Online Film Critics Society, and the Saturn Awards (George Pal Memorial Award).
Born in Carthage, New York, and raised in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where his father was head of the music department at Western Kentucky University, Carpenter moved to Los Angeles and attended the University of Southern California School of Cinema, where he directed his first theatrically released feature film, the 1975 science-fiction comedy Dark Star. In 2007, Western Kentucky University bestowed an honorary doctorate on Carpenter, who lives in Hollywood, California with his wife and frequent collaborator, Sandy King.
During her 40-year career in entertainment, Sandy King has worked with some of the world’s most acclaimed filmmakers, produced indelible classics of horror cinema and has created a fast-growing publishing company devoted to comics and graphic novels.
As a producer and filmmaker, Sandy has worked with directors as varied — and as legendary—as John Cassavetes, Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Mann, Walter Hill, John Hughes, and John Carpenter. The films she has produced range from box-office hits including They Live and John Carpenter’s Vampires, to the critically lauded CNN documentary Christa McAuliffe: Reach for the Stars, to public-service announcements for Hunger Awareness. She has directed and produced the John Carpenter Live Retrospective, focusing the horror icon’s accomplished musical career, and produced The Manor for Blumhouse Productions and Amazon Studios.
Her career has taken her into shark-infested waters in the Bahamas and to the red planet of Mars, which she helped create from 55 acres of New Mexico desert. But in one of her biggest adventures, Sandy has become the first female founder of a comics publishing house: Storm King Comics.
At Storm King Comics, Sandy has created and written the award-winning Asylum series; and overseen multiple award-winning Tales for a HalloweeNight, the monthly John Carpenter’s Tales of Science Fiction, and the graphic novel line Night Terrors. Under Sandy’s leadership, Storm King Comics has also launched a comics line, John Carpenter Presents Storm Kids, which offers comics and graphic novels for readers 4 to 18 years; Stanley’s Ghost from Storm Kids was nominated for an Eisner Award for best single issue. In 2023, Storm King Comics celebrated its 10th anniversary by introducing a new imprint, Dark & Twisted.
Sandy also produced the Peacock series Suburban Screams, described as a “bloody fine hybrid” of horror and documentary and deemed “perfect for true crime buffs and horror fans alike.” Sandy is also developing multiple series and recently launched a horror podcast, John Carpenter Presents Roanoke Falls, which won multiple Signal Awards, including Listeners’ Choice and Best Scripted Fiction. Sandy is married to director John Carpenter and lives in Hollywood.
