Silver and Gold! Heritage Offers Early Superman and Batman Comics Certified by CGC

Heritage Auctions is kicking off the new year with an amazing auction featuring some of the most iconic first appearances and early grail issues. Bidding is already underway for more than 450 books graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) in the Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction, which will be held January 9-12, 2025.

Among the standouts of this auction is an Action Comics #1 graded CGC 6.5 Restored (lot 91003), featuring the first appearance of Superman. In the 1940s and 1950s, Superman soared to cultural prominence as an iconic American superhero. During these decades, Superman was not just a comic book hero but also a radio, television and film star, symbolizing hope and justice during World War II and the post-war era. Today, Superman remains a cultural icon, consistently popular through comic books, movies, television shows and merchandise.

Also available is a Batman #49 graded CGC 9.6 (lot 91056). This comic, which is tied for the highest grade in the CGC Census, introduced two notable characters to the Dark Knight’s world: Vicki Vale and the Mad Hatter. Vicki Vale is a tenacious photojournalist with a knack for getting too close to Batman’s secrets, and she became one of Bruce Wayne’s prominent love interests. She was famously portrayed by Kim Basinger in the 1989 Batman film. Meanwhile, the Mad Hatter emerged as a quirky, Lewis Carroll-inspired villain with an obsession for hats and mind control.
