CGC Remembers John Verzyl, a Giant in the Comics World

Posted on 3/14/2018

Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) joins the comic world in mourning the passing of John Verzyl, a titan of the industry whose passion and knowledge were unparalleled. John Verzyl was one of CGC's first dealer accounts and the company enjoyed 18 years of working closely with him and his family.

"I am at a loss for words and completely shocked," said Harshen Patel, Director of Operations at CGC. "John was everything positive you can imagine. This hobby and this world lost an amazing person, and he will never be forgotten.”

Born in 1961, Verzyl turned a childhood fascination with comic books into a successful career, opening and operating his store, Comic Heaven. He became an authority in the comic book community and served as an adviser to the Overstreet Price Guide for over 20 years. He was an infinite source of knowledge about everything comic book related. He was one of the best salesmen on the floor at Comic Con, and he had an incredible collection of books that brought in people from all over. He treated each person he met with kindness and familiarity. Many in the industry remembered him for his efforts to support the growth of the collectible community.

"I was lucky enough to get to know John over the years," said Matt Nelson, Primary Grader at CGC. "He was not only a major force in the industry, but the sweetest guy with a big heart. Every time I saw him, he was cheery and full of conversation. And whip smart. It was always fun negotiating with him; I always walked away a little smarter each time. I really appreciated his sense of humor, which perfectly fit his personality. When I think of him, I can't help but recall those hilarious moments we had."
