Spider-Man’s iconic first appearance, Amazing Fantasy #15, in high-grade CGC 8.5 VF+ condition, sold in ComicLink’s recently closed February Featured Auction for a whopping $120,100.
This is only the second time that this issue in 8.5 has reached the $120,000 mark. The first occurred in 2008, when another example sold for $122,000 — also in a ComicLink auction. “We knew that it was going to get strong bidding interest," says ComicLink President Josh Nathanson. “Our bidders are always excited when they have an opportunity to purchase a high-grade Amazing Fantasy #15, and bid aggressively in order to obtain them."The Amazing Spider-Man #1 CGC 9.0 in the same ComicLink auction also hit a public sales record when it sold for $42,900. It is the first example of this issue in 9.0 condition to reach the $40,000 mark in a public sale.”The popularity of Spider-Man today is at a very high level. Long a favorite of collectors and consumers, Spider-Man’s origin was born of the comic book genre, but the character has gained worldwide exposure via other media such as television, the toy aisle and — just since 2002 — four feature films. Spider-Man’s visibility and popularity are both high right now, as collector enthusiasts are anticipating the next movie installment coming in 2014.To consign to upcoming ComicLink auctions (the firm has auctions launching in March through May), simply email your prospective auction list to email@example.com, or call 617-517-0062 (option 1) to speak with Douglas Gillock, Jason Crosby, Sean Goodrich, Jon Signorelli, Josh Nathanson or other members of the ComicLink team.
