    Back from CGC!!

I sent off 16 comics from my personal collection and I got the back today. 14 of 16 comics at 9.8 and 2 at 9.6. I sent in 11 variants of Gen 13 #1 and all came back 9.8, but of course there is no place for me to add them in the registry. The other 9.8 are Aphrodite IX preview, Fathom Black & White, and F5 #1 Bikini variant. Overall I am very pleased and it shows that I take excellent care of my collection. I am also very picky as to what goes into my collection, hence the high grades.

The year already half way through and I just realized I never set a goal for my collection for this year!

Goals I set for myself in my CGC Registry set to be completed before the end of the year:

    1) Increase the number of double cover ASMs in my registry set by 5 books. The current count in 2007 is 14 books. My stretch goal will be 6 additional books to make it an even 20.

    2) Increase my standing in my ASM set to #40. I'm going to try to do this with only double covers.

    3) Start to accumulate Journey Into Mystery and Thor double covers, my second passion. I've got a lot of raw Thors so it's time to start sending them into CGC

    4) Not really a goal, but I will probably list any other CGC graded double covers I have with pictures uploaded.

Comics I loved as a kid I want to read again.

I am sure that we all have our first comic story. when i was a kid I remember the comics on the wire rack and my Grandmother would let me pick one every now and then to read: G.I. Combat, Ghost, House of Mystery. Lately I have been feeling nostalgic. I want to read the old books. Times may have changed but for some reason those old stories and art still grab me.

Seems like they must be grabbing a lot of us again. Tried to find a few on eBay and the prices seem to be going up. Of course, a reprint wont do. I want the original.

As many of us seem to say later in life; If only I knew then, what I know now. Maybe it is just an escape now, to remember the excitement and joy of getting my book home and thumbing through it a thousand times. Picking up and reading one of those books reminds me of that joy I felt all those years ago. Reading was truly an escape. It sure did not take much to make me happy then. A book here, a book there, and i was in heaven.

  4. New and old???? Finding Action Comics #1??? Good luck because its probaply not going to happen.

Hi, I am a big collector and I mainly like to collect Marvel and DC. mY personal favourites are Action Comics, Superman, Spiderman, Captain America and the Avengers. I have been looking on ebay for the original Action Comics #1, but all I can find is reprints, it is really hard I'm guessing to find one. I have been buying on Ebay for quite some time now and I have been looking and looking for Action comics #1, not once have I actualyy found the original, and if I find it, I will post it and spread the word. Thx for looking and read some of my other articles, bye and happy reading.

This is my "pet" comic book. I can find a reason to like ANY comic book, but this particular Issue was one that I could not afford when I was a young boy. I vowed that one day that I was going to own at least one. And keep it forever. This IMSM was a "true" one-shot - it was never intended to go to Issue # 2. Marvel Comics had just obtained permission to add extra titles to their Statements of Publications, so they gave Captain America and the Hulk their own titles immediately. But Marvel could not add all four( 4) new Premier Issues for the four characters right away; there must have been a one-month delay to publish all four titles. This presented a problem of what to do with Iron Man and the Sub-Mariner, even if it was one month. Iron Man was teamed up with Cap in that classic series, Tales of Suspense( TOS). The Sub-Mariner was teamed up with the Hulk as those two shared another classic series, Tales to Astonish( TTA). Cap got to pick up the numerical sequential number of # 100, as TOS left off at # 99. The Hulk got to pick up at # 102, as TTA left off at # 101. But what to do with old Shellhead and Pointy-ears??? Stick them in ONE comic for the ONE month, and everyone will be happy. It was decided that Iron Man would be the o

  6. Which 1980 NTT book sold for $230+? It wasn't No. 2. . .

Well, much to my surprise it wasn't a number 1 or the well known first Deathstroke (number 2). Instead, the 9.8 copy of number 4 went for over $230. I've been saying for some time now that book is rare in high condition, and when 1 of the 2 9.8 copies came up for sale last week, the sale price proved me right. Supply and Demand lives! Alas, I was not the one who purchased it, but I'm starting to feel much better about the 9.6 white pg copy I bought recently.

So, to all of the other NTT collectors (and comic collectors in general), Merry Christmas!

I am working up a list of books from my current Batman and Batman-Related Comic Book collection.

    And so it begins...

I have been selling my old inventory since moving to Colorado from Oregon. My Marvel Publishing books netted me a tidy sum, but my subsequent selling of my DC Publishing books was a disappointment. I felt at least a little cheated. My old Superman and Action Comics alone should have fetched the money I recieved, that completely leaves out the Silver Age Atom, Forever People, Adventure, Green Lantern, etc.

So today I'm suffering the upkeep monster, systematically going through my collection of personal books - making sure each bag is clean, backed, and sealed without folds on the flap corners.

Labeling dividers and deciding on how the books shall be boxed for future referral.

Autoghraped and signed to me by Josh Howard!

My friend Jax got me into comic books when she brought me along with her one year for Free Comic Book Day. My first love is the series Dead@17; the first comic of the small but growing collection was "Blood of Saints (3 of 4)" autographed by Josh Howard(and I got to meet)!

Can you guess which comics I am adding now?

Again I am buying Batman and Detective comics, and I picked up another Aquaman as well. Superboy continues to grow, but I am still not finding any competitions for these to register them.

Without a real game plan for building a set to completion or the like, I am recalling comics I once traded or filling gaps all over the place. I like building FF and DD, but again and again come back to Action and Detectives.

Remind me to submit half of my books to build my set that way, likely a good idea!

Peter David is one cool guy.

Today Peter David was signing comics at my comic shop. I got Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman #17 signed and me, being the newb that I am, didn't know he wrote World War Hulk Prologue. I didn't bring mine and the shop didn't have any copies left either.

A guy about 2 places in front of me asked if Peter could sign a comic for his friend. Peter said no, not because it wasn't his but because the comic wasn't written by him! The guy asking for the autograph said that's what he told his friend but his friend still insisted that he ask.

That's when Peter proceeded to tell us some very funny stories about some encounters he's had with other fans. He had the whole store laughing for about 20 minutes straight. I'll leave the storytelling telling to him. He's much better at it.

While I was there I also bought Wolverine Origins #2-14, not including 7 and 13.

  12. I just purchased an Incredible Hulk 181 CGC 7.5 today + plus a reader copy. But I also got something else out of the transaction.

I just purchased an Incredible Hulk 181 CGC 7.5 today + plus a reader copy. After I made the purchase and I was driving home from my local comic book store I had this weird feeling come over me.It was feeling I had not had in a long long time when leaving a comic book store. It was not until I got home and read the reader copy that I put my finger on it.

It was the same feeling I got when I bought my first comic book on a rainy Sat in Nov in 1983.I can't put it into words but when I described it to other collector's they give you that knowing smile and nod like they know it too.

I had been lacking that feeling for a long long time.Just kind of going through the motions of collecting.I was even starting to think of stopping my beloved hobby for awhile. Not because of monetary or time constraints but because I was feeling burnt out, like it was becoming a business(I see so many people buy comics that they think are going to be "hot" and not read them than buy something that may not be as hot but they get alot of enjoyment out of).Which I am starting to notice more and more when I see parents bring there kids into the store and the child sees something that peaks there curiosity but instead the parent asks the clerk what the hottest title is and which one will go up in value the fastest and makes the kid buy that one instead.

I have wanted to get this book (Hulk 181) for the last 20 years. And today I have fullfilled one of my comic book collecting dreams.

But more importantly I recaptured the feeling I got that got me into comic collecting in the first place.

Merry Marvel Marching Society Member since 1964.

Raised in the atomic 60"s remember the cuban missle crisis. As a child I remember that eveing before we went to bed our father said. We'll be lucky to be alive the next day. My two brothers and I were raised on a farm 5 miles from Merrill, Oregon 30 miles outside of Klamath Falls, Oregon. Merrill had a grocery store and a pharmacy that sold comics. Klamath Falls had a news stand that also sold comics. In those days a dollar went a long ways, each of us were given a dollar to spend on comics. We raced to the store to find the best comics. Marvel comics of course. The only DC comics I like were the war comics such as Sgt Rock.

I love Conan. Plain and simple. Now it's time to honor the character.

This is my first Journal entry and it's a big one! I got on EBay to look at comics there to see if I could get lucky. After about 2 years of looking I found a 1 day sale on a Conan the Barbarian #1 comic book with $25 as it's opening bid. Since the bid would end so soon I figured what the heck and placed an order for $150 since it was all I could afford at the time. I got LUCKY! I won it for $37 which included SH&H. When it came in the mail it was EXTREMELY Carefully Wrapped. I'm having it shipped out to see what it grades at but for $37 I'm NOT GOING TO COMPLAIN! It looks at least like a 9.0 to me. *Crosses Fingers*

  13. A 9.4 copy of Our Army at War #218. Heaven.

As I continue to pursue the Bronze Age Our Army at War run, there have been a few surprises along the way. One is that - without question - this is going to a long and expensive process, as these books are proving tougher to find than I had anticipated. But the big discovery is, frankly, the simple thrill of finding certain books in certified high grade. Our Army at War #218 is a case in point.

The 218 is one of the classic issues of this title. I first found a copy about 6 years ago in small hole in the wall store in Orlando, Florida. It was a FN, and I remember that despite the grade, I couldn't wait to read it. I had heard about the book from fellow collectors.

The reason OAAW #218 is so dear to me is that it has both an incredible Russ Heath art job on the Sgt. Rock tale, AND a key backup story - the first appearance of the USS Stevens by writer and artist Sam Glanzman. The USS Stevens was one of the most popular and successful backup series in DC war comics. So it was a book I always wanted to have.

When the sole 9.4 copy of this book came up, I knew I had to have it, and thankfully Frank and Stephen at Metropolis made it possible for me to get it. In addition to all of this, it's the Oakland copy. So I have finally been able to get an example from this well-known pedigree into my collection.

I have a raw copy of this book that would probably grade 9.0/9.2 but there really is no describing the thrill of opening the FedEx box and holding this book. And in the end, it's moments like those that make the hours and hours of searching completely worthwhile.
