Wanted: 10 boxfuls of GA from my garage sales excursions this summer!

At this point in my comic collecting, I am putting together an action comics run of #1 through #108 plus a few issues above.

Currently, I am working on issues #65 through #108 To date, (March 13, 2007) I have 20 books. This includes 3 books that I will be sending to CGC next week. I hope to have this run completed in about a year. After that, I will work on #40 through #64

I prefer to buy my books raw, so I can flip through them before sending to CGC I look for books with nice eye appeal ranging from a bare minimum of 4.0 to 8.0 I don't care for books with names written on them, but a discreet date stamp is ok. Most important. UNRESTORED

    Thanks for reading,

    Mike

    Comics are for action

    Comics are for fun

    nothing is better

or am I just dumbTo me comicbook collecting is a great way to get rid of stress. You don't have to spend a lot. I myself mostly collect issues number one.

  1. The first million dollar sale of a single private coin collection was that of George F. Scanlon auctioned by Stack's on Oct. 24-27, 1973. It brought $1,093,890.00. He had only collected for 10 years.

E PLURIBUS UNUM (one out of many) first appeared on the 1795 Liberty Cap-Heraldic Eagle gold half eagle.

The Peace Dollar represents the first time where the word "Peace" was used on a coin of any nation.

The largest gold nugget on record was found in 1869 in Victoria, Australia. It weighed 208 pounds.

The motto IN GOD WE TRUST first appeared on a coin of the U.S. in 1864, during the Civil War.

The smallest monetary unit ever issued in the U.S. was the half cent. It was minted from 1793 through 1857.

The Smithsonian Coin Collection has approximately 850,000 coins.

  2. NOT SURE IF I AM KEEPING MY COLLECTIONS, ADDING TO THEM, OR STARTING ANOTHER COLLECTION OF WHAT?

I STARTED COLLECTING COMICS BACK IN STATEN ISLAND , NEW YORK WHEN I WAS ABOUT TEN ( 35 YRS AGO). MY BEST FRIEND BILLY F. UNCLE WAS IN MILITARY AND WAS STATIONED IN GERMANY FOR MANY YRS... HIS SON CAME BACK TO THE US WITH A TRUCNK FULL OF COMICS. I BOUGHT HALF APX 300 AND BILLY BOUGHT THE REST.... TODAY I HAVE APX 1100 COMICS...AT THAT TIME I STARTED COLLECTING BASEBALL CARDS AND STOPPED COLLECTING BOTH WHEN I STARTED WORKING ON WALL STREET. i HAVE APX 700 BASEBALL CARDS FROM THE SEVENTYS

Hi, I recently purchase this Comic Book, its approximately 13 1/2 inches by 10 1/8 inches. It looks to be in Ok shape is there any thing that anyone can tell me about it? I was going to put it on ebay but my friend said to do some research first.

I hope that all members here can have a safe and fun time collecting

The Internet has it's fill of rude people on the Internet. Most collectors' that I have encountered here have excellent reputations. This can be seen by activity on eBay. Members ship when they say they will and pay when they say they will. I suppose dishonest people could try to use this site to their advantage, but they don't, and I hope it stays that way. One way we can keep it that way is to be cordial to fellow members and if you have a problem with something someone has typed or even written in their journal, I'm sure contacting them first would be the appropriate course of action. Like I mentioned, looking at Registry members behavior on selling venues and forums shows that most are honest and reasonable people to deal with. Keeping this in mind, we should have fun collecting and try to discuss our concerns in a civil manner which will continue to attract honest collectors and dealers and continue to make this the safe site that it now is.

  3. It was more difficult than I anticipated due to the low population of a couple of books, but my CGC 9.8+ set of DC's Big Bang event, Crisis on Infinite Earths is complete!

It's the maxi-series that destroyed the DC Multiverse and re-set the DC Universe for the Modern Age of Comics. While I stil have some problems with some of the events/history that was re-set (especially LoSH and the concept that Superman was not the first "super-hero" that inspired everyone else), DC did a great job of resetting their continuity and universe.

Every cover in this series is absolutely stunning, with some of them (notably #1,7,8) ranking as all-time classics. This set is a collection DC's Big Bang Event in CGC 9.8. Would prefer CGC 9.9, but I doubt I'll find those for sale (at a reasonable price at least). In a couple cases, I have upgraded copies to the next best thing, which are CGC 9.8 Signature Series.

I also expected the set to be ranked #1 since I have SS of the key books (#1 & #7), but I do see that Jon's set has #9 in 9.8 SS which has the lowest population. However, I think my score should still be higher as there seems to be an error with the scoring for Crisis #7. In CGC 9.8, the points are 55 for a Universal grade copy, but only 44 for a Signature Series! To be consistent with the other books, the CGC 9.8 SS should be 61 points (which leaves me at 599! urk!)

  4. Never even saw this coming. Thanks CGC for the award.

I apologize for being so late in responding back to thank you guys at CGC for this honor. I just got back from South America and I saw this manila envelope from CGC. I was scratching my head when I saw it because I was trying to remember had I submitted any recent comics for grading. I was drawing a blank! Anyway I open it up and to my surprise this is what I receive. An award for Best Presented Set 2006. And for my favorite comic title "Ultimate Spider-man" without question, I am truly grateful.

This was a nice way to recognize and reward everyone for their efforts. This award was completely out of left field for me. I never did this to "show off" my set. I just did this cuz I thought it would be fun. I work alot to provided for my family and since Katrina (I am from New Orleans) and these crazy gas prices of course it can make this hobby tough to stick with. In the end though next to my family, comics has always been a 1st love for me.

I don't have the highest graded Ultimate Spider-man set out there but I wanted my love for Spider-man and this particular title and even comics in general to show. And I am glad I'm not the only Ultimate Spider-man fan/comic out here either. And that is why I came to CGC. To share in my love for comics. I love to check out the CGC forum and see the posts. Read up on the debates. Get inside info and opinions on CGC, comics, grading, and collecting past present and future. I get so much visiting this page. So I want to thank all the other collectors out there for their enthusiasm and not being ashamed to share their love for comics!

I will give it to you CGC guys, you know how to motivate and keep a collector collecting. ;) Once again thanks for this award and slowly but surely I will complete my Ultimate Spider-man "working man's set" one of these days. By the way CGC. No matter what your future goals are make sure you never forget this hobby means more to us than just who has the best set. For me at least it is about remembering my childhood and devoting part of my life to something that is mostly positive and most important sharing with my kids not only fantasy and the dangers of "evil" both real and imagined, but this hobby helps me explain what being a "TRUE" superhero is all about.

Once again I truly thank you guys for selecting me for an award...

    Have a great one.

  5. Is anyone else angry over this???

I recently went to Wizard World Chicago to get some modern books signed and graded. I had purchased the $50.00 10 pack of CGC signature witness passes for 10 books from Wizard. I had gotten six books signed by Turner and was going to get the last four signed by Loeb later in the day. When I went to get the books turned into CGC, they explained that because the books were signed, they would cost extra to grade. Now this just pisses me off. Normally a modern book, without the 20% discount is $16.00, at the convention, they are $22.00. Here is my kicker, signed yellow label grading at the con, $34.00 a book. AND CGC did not even do the witnessing, it was a Wizard representitive that did it. So why the markup for something they did nothing for. Oh and this one got me too, one book had three signatures cause the passes only count one book per pass, per table and three of the artist were at the table, so they all counted as one pass. Anyway, CGC charged an extra $5.00 per signature. That book cost $44.00 to get graded, luckly it came back as a 9.8, but still, over $200 to grade 6 modern books. I love CGC but that is overboard. Oh of the 6, 3 were 9.6 and 3 were 9.8's. Heres a list

Wolverine: Origins 1 9.8 Turner SS

Fathom 10 VIP edition 9.8 Turner, Turnbull, and Krul SS

    Supergirl 1 9.8 Turner SS

    Supergirl 2 9.6 Turner SS

Civil War Frontline 1 Sketch variant 9.6 Turner SS

Witchblade 100 VIP edition 9.6 Turner SS

I sent 30 books & got some bad surprises!

I sent 30 books and expected some great results and was very dissappointed. Here they are:

    1.) Amazing Spider-Man 300 (5)= 9.0, 9.0 (Restored, SURPRISE), 9.4, 9.2, 6.5 (WO, That blew my mind, no way!)

2.) Superman 75 (Black Bag)(2)= 9.2, 8.0 (CGC said this book is hard to get mint because of items in bag pressing against it)

    3.) Astonishing X-Men 13 Sketch Variant (6)= 9.6, 9.6, 9.6, 9.6, 9.8, 9.8 (Midtown Comics Edition)

    4.) Amazing Spider-Man 529 (5)= all 9.8 (happy!)

5.) Amazing Spider-Man 252 (2)= 7.5 (I thought no worse than a 9.4), And one not graded for OVERHANG (WHAT IS THAT!)

    6.) Ms. Marvel 1 (Sketch Variant) 9.0 (I think at least a 9.6!)

    7.) Amazing Spider-Man 361= 9.6

8.) Amazing Spider-Man 298 (2)= both 9.4 (not happy, but can live with, feel both at least 9.6 if better)

    9.) Amazing Spider-Man 299= 9.2 (killing me, at least a 9.6)

    10.) Moon Knight 1 (Sketch Variant)= 3 at 9.6 & 2 at 9.8 (surprised all were not 9.8)

I asked a grader why some were the grades they were & they were helpful but when I got them back I couldn't find these flaws on back covers and such that were said. The restored one surprised me, but that will happen I guess. I sent in what I thought were all 9.6 or better, & got rocked. I understand grading is subjective but a few of these (like 6.5 or 9.0) were dissapointing. That makes me a little gunshy for future, but I must admit, there is a level of fun & satisfaction in it. I am going to try one more time with some Wolverine key issues, Rais, X-Men 266s, & others. Hopefully I will get better results!

Collect, buy, sell, trade, & so on & so on.....

I have been collecting comics since 1975-76, and have a pretty extensive collection. Altough my main collection is Marvel, I have had & do have many other titles {DC, EC, Valiant, Image, etc...).

I have been doing the eBay thing now since June of 2001, and before that have been buying, selling, tradeing at local shows in Mich.

I guess that's about it for now. I'll add more later. Have a great day! =0)

As a new member, I sent in my comics using my "Express Coupon" on March 7th...and my comics showed up on CGC's board on March 10th.

so when I checked the submission times and found out the Express Coupon gave me 20 working days, I calculated it till April 7th. However, now it is April 12th and I'm really beginning to become concerned. I sent an inquiry via email through Hotmail to CGC since my ISP in New Orleans has been spotty since Hurricane Katrina, but haven't received any feedback. I'm not sure if that asking for status updates is not allowed, but since I was new, I wanted to check on it. Anyhow, I hope my fears are ungrounded.

  9. Two books on the way!

I made my first submission to CGC. Witchblade #1 and #2. Basically I'm just trying this out to see how I like the results. I'm hoping that the books grade in the 9's as I've kept them in what I consider to be excellent shape. I'm interested in seeing if my idea of a high grade is close to what the "pros" think.

What is the FMV of the more rarely graded issues?

Just wondering exactly how someone determines the value of a CGC 9.4 9.6 or 9.8 without the price listed in the guide. Are they 2x, 4x or ??? the 9.2 worth?

    why spend all the money

Why spend all the money to get a book graded, when all you have to do is buy them on ebay. I sent a couple of books into ebay spending alot of money on them to get graded. I wnet on ebay and got the same books with better grades at 3/4 the cost. I guess I would never have gotten these books if someone didn't send them in. All I know is that I am never sending another book into get graded. I will let that to the rest of you guys.

  10. Why the resistance?

I recently took a trip to Connecticut from North Carolina to visit my sister. I made sure to plan spare time to visit the many comic book stores in the area during my trip. I was in THE HUNT for several items. One book was Infinite Crisis #3 which seemed to have a common defect of a ripped or wrinkled page. This defect was in every copy of every store I went to in North Carolina and every store except for one in Connecticut. While in THE HUNT, I also have been actively browsing and purchasing CGC'd books I am looking for. I went to one store (which will remain nameless) and after looking around, I asked the owner of the medium sized shop if he had any CGC'd books. As a Marine Staff Non-Commissioned Officer, I have a talent for reading people, and I can tell you I was reading such a look of disdain from this man. After looking at me and not replying, I asked if he had any "slabbed" books, to which he replied with a curt "no". It became very obvious he did not like a stranger in his store of overpriced, poor condition back issue comics asking for a guaranteed high quality book. As a former brick and mortar comic book shop owner in Swansboro, NC, I make it a habit to buy something in any comic book shop I visit. Hey, it costs money to keep the lights on so we can browse. I did not buy anything at this shop. I am happy to report that several other shops I visited on Saturday, January 14th were warm and receptive and did have CGC books on display or for sale. I have encountered this obvious disdain for CGC several times over the past year, from conventions to shops. One dealer from Canada at this past years Heroes Convention in Charlotte, NC, grew out of breath and flustered when I mentioned sending books off to CGC. He said he "hated" CGC and what it was doing to collectors market. Hated? Yikes! Imagine trying to hawk overpriced, sub par condition books now! I firmly believe the back issue market will remain strong as many folks still want to read original copies of their favorite books, smell the ink and feel the pages. However, it blows my mind that anyone spending any large amount of money on a comic, would not rather have a similar CGC'd copy, or want to send a high grade copy to CGC. I personally still enjoy sifting through back issue bins and finding suitable copies for possible submission to CGC. Well, this was a long winded journal entry! I promise to be shorter next week - Happy CGCing!

    Best Regards,

    Dudeman5000

Where is all this taking me?

I am not a comics collector per say and I do not consider myself one. But today I opened some boxes I had stached in the attic for years, it contained many comic books that I had purchased more than ten years ago with the intent to give them to my two boys who from time to time would come to visit me from Georgia. However, they were never interested enought in them as the new fad of entertaiment at the time (well it still is) was video games. And so most of them remained in their original mint condition inside the original plastic covers. My big surprise today was to find out how many I had actually purchased (mostly Superman Series comic books) and the unique editions I had in my collection. It included the entire series of the "Death of Superman" as well as "The Reign of the Supermen" all in near mint condition. There was even one signed by Dan Jurgen together with a certificate of autenticity.

The first thing that came to mind was - how much are these worth now? In my research I came to find out the CGC could really help me find an accurate value to the comics in my collection. Well lets see where is all taking me now!

I was wondering where Collectors' Society members like to shop in order toget their comics and sports cards

I was wondering where Collectors' Society members favorite places to get comics and sports cards. I like to preorder my comics from ebay member sector2814comics. He has an ebay store, has decent prices, ships stuff in a box(i hate it when people ship stuff in an envelope and it gets bent up) and bends over backwards for his customers. His website will open up around this spring. Anybody reading this entry is interested in checking him out, the ebay store name is sector2814 comics.
