About this journal

Well since the old journal format is gone I guess I'll try the new format. Right away I'm having issues...can't seem to fix the position of the picture, even though it appears correctly before uploading. Sigh. Anyway, thanks to dreamtoreal1 for this beauty. Excited to have ronnylama press it and get Claremont sign it at ECCC in March. Hoping for a 9.2 or better, but you never know sometimes. Hope everyone has a great 2018!

Til next time...

New Comic Shops

They really aren't about the comics... My wife and I decided to take in a matinee this afternoon at a small local theatre in Tempe...the movie was Maleficent. It was a bit of a chick flick but I liked it...totally flipped the whole Sleeping Beauty story. Anyway, as we were walking into the theatre we noticed a small new comic book store in the corner of the shopping complex. After watching the movie we of course decided to take a peek inside the comic store.       I am noticing a prevail

Hulk 181 CGC SS

I managed not to peek... I was telling Tnerb as soon as I saw the book had been shipped safe that I REALLY wanted to check the grade online, but somehow I managed to contain myself. I have never had more anxiety about the grade of any book in my life. This book has a lot of significance for me for a number of reasons. Sure its the first appearance of Wolverine, but more importantly its the first graded comic Ive ever owned...a beautiful 8.0 copy given to me by my wife 2006 as a Christmas prese

Marvel Trivia

True or False... I was reading some of this stuff and found it hard to believe so I thought, hey maybe I should write a journal to see how much my fellow collectors know. So...these are all true or false and once everyone has had their fun guessing, I will give the answers. If you believe something to be true and can even site the issue where this occurred then we will all be doubly impressed. If something is true and you can prove it, but I thought it was false...well, then I will just be emb

Books Arrived from ECCC

No peeking... Here we go again, no peaking and revealing to you as I open the box! These are the last few books I submitted at Emerald City Comic Con this year in Seattle...so sad there are no more coming from that show...until hopefully next year. I had to get these pressed at CCS...I picked them up at the show so there wasn't time to let Ronnylama work his magic on them. Let's see how they turned out.               This is like opening birthday presents, so excited. Box is opened a

Giant Size Super Stars 2

The book that never was... I picked up what I would say is a NM copy of Giant Size Super Stars number 1 from my LCS awhile back. It features a cool Hulk vs. Thing cover and I thought maybe this was some reprint that Marvel rewrapped in a new cover, but no it actually was a new story and I really enjoyed it. I even considered getting it graded, but after checking eBay even 9.6 copies weren't selling at low prices so I decided just to keep it raw in my collection...it may not have investment val

New Mutants 16 CGC 9.6

Latest addition... I don't know why I did it. Maybe I was channeling my inner Tnerb, but I saw this on eBay recently and figured why not throw up some ridiculously low bid and see what happens. I was very surprised when my bid won...less than a dollar more and I would have been outbid. Of course I sent a text to Tnerb right away to say, hey I just bought my first New Mutants CGC book. He agreed I got a smokin deal so Im happy with the purchase. Im not really a New Mutants fan to be honest but

ECCC Books are HERE

Look what came in the mail... After answering that all too familiar knock at my door tonight I was greeted by my friendly neighborhood UPS man who presented me with not one, but TWO boxes from CGC! OK so they are not huge boxes, but still exciting for me. Like last time I am opening these up one at a time and sharing with you as I go. These are some of the books I submitted at ECCC and I believe Ronnylama had a hand in pressing them for me. Let us see what happens... Tales of Suspense 82 CGC

Marvel Crossovers

I love these... My favorite comics are those featuring the Xmen from the Silver and Bronze Age and I love crossover books, so its only natural that my collecting focus gravitated toward Xmen crossovers during that time period. I started rereading some of those this past weekend in fact...cant get enough. As I looked through my collection I noticed I also had some crossovers that werent Xmen related, and I really liked them too. To clarify, when I say crossover Im referring to a story that star

Guess I have some books coming

Wish I didn't... I told Tnerb I would wait til I received the books from CGC but that could be another month or more away so Im writing this now. I had 3 invoices I submitted at ECCC...2 Universal and 1 Signature. I filled out 1 CCS form onsite to press some books I picked up at the show, these were Universal...the other 2 invoices I only used CGC forms but was assured they would be sent to CCS first. I saw the Universal invoice that was to go through CCS move to Verified status a couple of we

Top 5 List

Random favorites and opinions... On the way home from work today I started thinking about who the smartest heroes in the Marvel universe were. Yeah, random right? Then of course this led to me thinking who the smartest villains might be, then the most powerful, then the best looking women...covering all the bases of brains, brawn, and beauty. With the registry awards coming up now seems as good a time as any to share these thoughts with you and open up the floor to your own opinions. What do y

Phoenix Comic Con 2014

Busy day, big decision, sore feet... I planned on just attending this show on Saturday since CGC wasn't going to be there but I decided to take the day off work today as well and go look at comics. I figure the more time I spend doing that on my own, the more time I have to hang with the family and cruise the floor. It worked out well for me. The highlights of my comic searching landed me a NM minus copy of TOS 94...the first appearance of MODOK...and, a VG copy of Sgt. Fury 13...the second Si

GS Fantastic Four #4 CGC 9.6

Latest addition, 1st appearance... Its 1.11.2012 and what do I see? Not one, but two of the comics I want for my collection come up for sale on ComicLink that you rarely ever see show up in this condition. To date I had only seen these come up for sale like once every couple of years. Problem is I cant afford both, no way. So I make my choice, and its Fantastic Four 104 CGC 9.6. I wont go into it here about why I wanted this issue so badly but if youre interested you can check out the journal

They Have Arrived

Latest additions... I was just finishing my dinner...a carne asada enchilada style burrito, shredded beef taco and a glass of Menage a Trois CA red...not the best of combinations I know, but wine sounded really good and so did Mexican food...then I hear a familiar truck engine and horn honk. It was the UPS man dropping off my CGC books from the Amazing AZ Con in January. It was like a scene out of Christmas Story when the leg lamp arrived as we all stopped and I looked around at my family at t

This week from my LCS 5/22/14

Found a few cool reading copies... I love it when my LCS has a new batch of Silver Age books to look through. Nothing so good this week its worth getting graded, but some nice looking reading copies. This is what I went home with... Tales to Astonish 55 in VG minus Avengers 17 in FN minus Avengers 18 in VG plus All have great eye appeal and make a nice addition to my collection. I would like to have a complete run of Avengers through issue 200 and all the Ant Man Giant Man issues of Ta

Free Comic Book Goodness

And other goodies... Yesterday was Free Comic Book Day and today is May the Fourth be with You Day. My youngest son and I paid a visit to our LCS and picked up a few free books. Then the comic shop owner brought a long box he had just purchased...books weren't even priced yet. I love it when I get first crack at the good stuff. I was able to pick up an ASM 238 NM, an ASM 300 NM...dare I say NM Plus, Warlock 1 VF NM, and Marvel Premiere 15 VF. My son paid for the Marvel Premiere with his own mo

The Amazing Fantasy that was ECCC 2014

Some things, like Disneyland, you just have to experience for yourself... Im writing this on the plane ride home from Seattle to Phoenix...my mind still reeling from all that went down over the past 4 days. This is really going to be like 5 journals in 1, but I cant stop writing so please bear with me. What just happened? Its like Parnell and Sandburg said...I just got taken to a dream world of magic. Now, what happens at the Ronnylamas stays at the Ronnylamas, but I will share some of my e

Marvel Mania

Anyone remember this restaurant... I was going through my closet this week looking for books to take with me to ECCC and ran across a kids menu I kept from the Marvel Mania restaurant in Hollywood, just outside Universal Studios. They opened briefly in November of 1998 and I was able to visit once before they were gone forever. They offered food and drinks based on almost every Marvel hero and villain that you could imagine, not to mention they also had a cool gift shop. The food wasnt great,

Meeting Cap and Thor

These guys are ever cooler in person... My family and I just got back from Disneyland again. This was the last chance we had before our annual passes expired and the kids were on Spring Break so it worked out. We love this theme park. Last year I wrote a journal about how the Innoventions attraction featured an amazing Iron Man exhibit with every suit of armor on display and a really cool interactive virtual experience where you could put on the armor, fly around the room, and virtually blast

This week from my LCS

Picked up a couple of nice issues... I love it when I ask my LCS owner if he has any new goodies for me to look at and he brings out a couple of long boxes from the back filled with Silver Age goodness! This week I was able to peruse some Tales to Astonish and Captain America back issues among other things. I walked out of there with Cap 105 in VF featuring Batroc for 15 bucks and Tales to Astonish 48 in VG featuring the first appearance of The Porcupine for 35. To me these are the kinds of bo

Enjoying X-men Legacy

Just finished issue #22... This is one of those titles where I really, really, look forward to the next issue. If you havent been reading this book, shame on you. I have no idea who the artist and writer are, dont care...all I care about is how much I enjoy every issue. This isnt the Xmen Legacy of old where we follow a team of heroes trying to live up to Charles Xaviers legacy...here, we follow Legion, the son of the aforementioned Xavier. The book summary says it best...Charles Xaviers mutan

Amazing AZ Con 2014

Good times... Amazing AZ Con 2014 I was ill prepared for the first con of the season. After 5 hours of walking the floor my legs, knees, and feet were aching. My story is Im out of shape, not old, and Im sticking to it. The wife and I walked to dinner at Majerles...as in Dan Majerles, of Phoenix Suns fame...after we had seen every vendor at least 3 times, headed back to the con for one final walk around, then headed home. I grabbed a beer out of the fridge and soaked my sore feet in the hot

Marvel Value Stamp

Series A 1974 I know, I know, two consecutive journals in the same day...sorry, couldnt help myself. The subject is related to my last journal, but needed its own space. So I was looking through the ads of an old Bronze Age book the other day, Captain America 172 to be exact, and saw something I had seen many times before but never gave it much thought. Im talking about those Marvel Value Stamps. We all try to be wary of buying a book thats missing the stamp as it completely devalues the book,

The Mighty Marvel Checklist

Xmen set updated... I was reading a copy of TOS the other day and noticed an advertisement for the other Marvel books that were published that same month. These are found under the section labeled The Mighty Marvel Checklist...Marvelous Mags On Sale Right Now! Unfortunately not every issue gets a preview, but those that did have now been added to the comic descriptions in my Xmen The Missing Years set. Some of them are pretty corny, but some just suck you in. Makes me wonder who wrote them, ma

Time flies

Is it Con season already? So my wife asks me today hey, did you know the Amazing AZ Con was in less than 2 weeks? Well, I knew it was in January...the first con of the year...but I guess time just sorta slipped away from me. I totally did NOT realize it was that close. Apparently she had been talking with someone who thankfully happened to mention it otherwise another week would have gone by, or worse I may have even missed it altogether. I must be getting old, its the only thing that makes se

Tales of Suspense

Adding to the collection Its been awhile since Ive written journal. Instead Ive been living vicariously through others here as they write about their latest additions and collecting experiences while leaving comments when I can. The truth is I havent had the funds to outright buy the high grade issues I want so I havent really had anything to write about. I have purchased several high grade books for my X-men appearance collection over the past few months that I plan to have pressed and graded
