  1. As a commercial artist, I know how this feels. Just another day at the drawing board and a mob of creepy gremlins helping you move toward your deadline..... This is the nicest Punch 9 I have seen. Thanks for sharing it Alan!
  2. I've got a thread started in the Golden/Silver/Bronze Age section that i will be adding to over the next week. My family and I are moving next month into a new house that has more room for my twins, my corgis and for me to do my artwork. It's very exciting but also very expensive. I'm hoping these sales will help with the costs. The first part of the thread features a handful of my low-mid-grade SA Marvels (mostly ASM a Hulk 2). I'm also putting up a good stack of books from my GA Pre-Code Horror collection. Everything from low-grade readers to mid-higher grade Pedigrees will be there. Thanks! Christian
  3. I've listed a bunch of GA Pre-Code horror. Many are affordable low-grades and there are also plenty of mid to higher grades as well. http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=4819573&fpart=3
  4. I've never seen those pre-Wacky Pack cards. Cool stuff! I love those creature designs for Outer Limits! I've never seen any of these episodes before... Anyone on here seen Outer Limits? Any good?
  5. I agree. One of my favorite Harvey covers! Pucker up Buttercup!
  6. That room looks great Steve! It makes me want to spend the day away reading comics. I see at lease two of my pieces in there. Is that right? -Christian
  7. I hear you Sharon. I usually stay out of this stuff but this isn't the first time there have been issues here with this seller. I recall a story about an early Tec that was sold through time payments and then revoked because he got a higher price elsewhere. My own personal history with this seller has been one book a couple of years ago. A TTA that I specifically asked if an area had a tear seal on or was it a printer's crease. I was told it was a crease and there was no resto/tear seal. When I got the book I opened it, looked on the inside front cover and there is was, a tear seal...clear as day. Since it was a reader copy (and it took a long time for the seller to even ship the book) I didn't bother to return it but it definitely left a bad taste. Just my 2 cents, I hope this is the right place for this discussion. I don't usually venture onto this area of the boards.
  8. I drew some of these at the San Diego Zoo a few years ago. These weren't very bulky. They were more Badger-like. Awesome animals!
  9. A Disney seems out of place in this thread, but that's a great looking copy! I see no more rational place to post this book. Is there a problem with the title of this thread? Or is the problem perhaps with the focus of the collectors posting in this thread? Bondage cover... with potential iron torture if Chip And Dale come along....??
  10. Well this is an interesting topic. Boardmember Boot had already broken down the issues stories last year and declared it a horror book. It was a very compelling case as shiverbones said. Boot's review The only thing for me though is the usage of the word "Horror". Wikipedia's definition of terror and horror: The distinction between horror and terror is a standard literary and psychological concept applied especially to Gothic literature and film.[1] Terror is usually described as the feeling of dread and anticipation that precedes the horrifying experience. By contrast, horror is the feeling of revulsion that usually occurs after something frightening is seen, heard, or otherwise experienced. It is the feeling one gets after coming to an awful realization or experiencing a deeply unpleasant occurrence. In other words, horror is more related to being shocked or scared (being horrified), while terror is more related to being anxious or fearful.[2] Horror has also been defined as a combination of terror and revulsion. When I think of Pre-code horror stories I immediatly think of stories involving ghouls, vampires, zombies or ghastly death/dismemberment. This is more in line with the definition above. I personally consider Front Page as having an absolute "Horror" cover. The first story is more a supernatural story (sorry not horror to me) and the rest really fall into the crime/war catagory. But herin lies the problem where the line blurs a bit. Horror stories show up in other genres of pre-code books, take for example Lawbreakers Suspense Stories #15. In my mind this is clearly a crime book but one only has to look at the cover to get the sense of horror. You then open it and see that every story has gruesome horror elements in it. My review of LSS#15 In contrast to this we also have, as Boot pointed out, pre-code horror books that contain only supernatural stories and science fiction stories. Are these horror books based soley on the title name? I have never read the contents of Avon's Eerie #1 so I can't comment but horror started creeping into comicbook titles of all genres sometime in the 1940's as far as I can see. If I recall correctly, the superhero comic Yellowjacket contained horror stories. So the first pre-code horror comicbook from cover to cover? I still don't know! I would however consider Front Page as one of these hybrid attempts but also note that it could possibly contain the first appearance of a "Horror Host", The Man in Black. Well reasoned Jay! This all makes sense to me. Here's a way to look at it. I collect it as three different collections... Collection #1 PreCode Horror (1948-1955) These books are the meat and potatoes that we see and hear about all the time. Total horror without a shadow of a doubt. Most of these titles meet and exceed my personal requirement for the definition of a "Horror" comic. Some examples of these would be: Mister Mystery, Weird Mysteries, Horrific, Weird Terror, Haunted Thrills, The Thing!, Menace, Haunt Of Fear, Journey Into Fear, Out Of The Shadows, Witches Tales, etc.... Collection #2 Pre-Code Horror "flavored" (1948-1955) I group these books right alongside Collection #1 and consider them part of the same collection however they are noted to be more of the hybrid variety with strong "Horror" elements. One can easily argue that they can be labeled "Crime" or "SciFi" as much, or more then, "Horror". Some of the titles that fall into this category are: Fight Against Crime, Lawbreakers Suspense Stories, Weird Tales From The Future, Journey Into Unknown Worlds, and Amazing Adventures. Collection #3 PRE-Pre-Code Horror (Pre 1948) This is a wide open and often gray area where a lot of discoveries are made. It's sort of the wild west of collecting from the years of 1938-1948. This is where all of these books pop up that are contenders for "1st Horror Comic". Books like these include: Eerie Comics #1, Front Page, Yellowjacket, etc. I have found many "horror" type books and hybrids as early as 1940 with Shadow Comics, The Claw and The Hangman. One could also make the argument that some of those Timely covers feature some pretty horrific scenes. Also, in 1939, Batman actually shoots a vampire dead while it sleeps in a coffin. It's a pretty gray area. I have found this area very exciting as comics were still finding their feet and the medium was reinventing itself to see what worked. Footnote: There a many references out there for PreCode horror collecting but the most useful ones that I find myself returning to are: A.) These boards B.) Tales Too Terrible Too Tell fanzines
  11. Artboy- Indeed, we do share similar taste in PreCodes as do the other frequent collectors in this thread. By the way, nice original art and recreations. That Venus 19 piece is amazing! Scrooge- Thanks for posting those pages! It looks like a typical wild story from this notorious publisher! Jayman- The MM 4 a solid 7.0. The flaws are minor. Just a subtle cover crease that doesn't show up in the scan and a few dings on the back cover/edges. Really a great copy. Congrats on the Front Page! I love that cover and its a nice book. I think the poor guy on the cover just got stabbed in the head by that ghost. Of course he was robbing a grave so it's not like he's totally innocent. I'd like to hear your opinion after you've read through it as to how you'd classify the inside stories. Are they horror, crime, espionage, or some sort of hybrid?
  12. Tough book to find in anything over VG. This copy came from our own Andy over at Goldust Comics. This book is supposed to have an offbeat story about a man who goes crazy in a rubber room. It's titled "The Button" I believe. Ever since reading about it in the Tales Too Terrible Too Tell fanzine Ive been searching for a decent copy. I'll be cracking this slab open on a special occasion and reading that story. Can't wait.
  13. Looks familiar! Great looking book! Congrats on the pickup Jay! Reminds me of my time spent growing up at the Shore too. Looks like a Ciba Geigy pollution creature creeping out of Barnaget Bay!
  14. Nice book! (thumbs u You need to delve more into the "other guys", I think you will be pleasantly surprised! +1 Lots of great hidden stories out there. I love this cover too. Really bizarre stuff even for Cole. Look at how heavily shadowed the man's face is yet his hand is remarkable "lightly" drawn...I think these little quirks add to these covers. Look at the colors in that guy's face too! Wild stuff!
  15. Cheetah - which auction was this? Those are AMAZING. Man, the quality of the EC art was so far beyond their competitors'. (Hope I'm not stepping on any toes.) I think Star Publications were of equal quality if not better. The STAR covers were better indeed due to L.B. Cole but the insides were a mash up of reprints of crime, mystery, jungle. horror. Some good stuff in there but not as well crafted or organized as the EC stuff. Just my opinion.
  16. Nice Pat! Awesome group shot! Especially that TMIH #3. Looks like it's in pretty good shape. I love the Dr.Death portrait too.
  17. Wow Jaster! Nice to see a real Fett fan on here. Nice collection. Are those two rocket-firing protoypes in the shadowbox replicas? If so, I have the same ones. They look perfect and sit real well with my other mandolorians. Great post!
  18. Got a great deal on a great book from a great boardie here! Fast shipping too!! Thanks John!
  19. Cheetah, Those Gaines File Copies are beautiful. That Haunt Of Fear is my favorite Ingels cover. You've got great PreCode taste. Doiby, Looks like a nice stack of horrific reading! Nice choices. I just read Mysterious Adventures 15 recently. It was wonderfully morbid. You're in for a treat there. -Christian
  20. Awesome. That's what I need. Can you believe there's actually a CGC 9.9 copy of this issue??? Wow, if that book ever hit the open market... ...I'd still place an utterly futile bid on it. This is just as impressive! Nice book Thomas! Hope you are doing well. -Christian
  21. FF 5 is one of my favorite books! Absolutely insane! Even more amazing is FF #1-10 in 9.0 Congrats!
  22. Senormac and Mutant Manatee, those retro cool rockets are great! For the ones blasting off, I got those from the creator back in 2006 at a toy show. He used to work at ILM doing miniature sculpture for effects shots. Pretty cool!
  23. All aboard! Both great books I don't have yet. What are the insides like on that Mysterious Traveler? Are they strictly "horror" or are they one of the hybrids? I love the way Powell drew and I think he's got some art in there.
  24. Christian, I have to admit that this cover never did anything for me. I always thought:"Wow...a big foot! " But now seeing a nice big scan (and a beautiful copy btw), I just noticed the rat "chews" on the foot and that ups a level of creepiness to this book for me! Nice! Yeah Jay, I felt exactly the same way about this issue too. That is until I read this issue's feature story in the Pre-Code Horror retrospective "The Horror The Horror!" Below is a scan of the opening splash of that story. One look at that first page had me wipe the drool from my mouth and send this one to the top of the wantlist! Covers get most of the praise but my favorite part of comics are the stories inside. SO much great stuff in there. Side note: When my wife was little, her family had a mouse loose in the house. While laying on the floor watching the TV....a mouse ran across the top of her bare feet. Today, she doesn't hate mice but she has a good healthy fear of them. When I opened the book to share it with her she gave me her tolerant "comic book smile" and quickly left the room. All is well though. She got flowers the same day.
